Summary of Position

Reporting to the Manager Farm of the Future, the Research Technician is responsible for the execution of research trials: preparing trial layout, assist in seed grading and cutting, field scouting, collecting field data, sampling of soil and petioles, planter evaluation, utilization of remote sensing technology including drone, satellite and soil scanning technology, harvesting 10-foot digs, use of Decision support systems for pest, disease and water management, grading, data analysis and report writing. Candidate must be able to operate farm equipment and a valid driver's license to operate farm equipment. Capacity to use GIS software is an asset.

Qualifications

Minimum to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory manner. Candidate must have the knowledge to conduct scientific trials and operate farm equipment or willing to learn quickly.

Summary of Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in agriculture or Diploma in Agriculture or Agriculture Engineering or other relevant combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of farm equipment, emerging agriculture technologies and remote sensing technology will be an asset
  • Basic computer skills is essential
  • Passion to learn data analysis and GIS software and develop new skills
  • Experience with potato or other crop production is an asset
  • Attention to detail, dependability, a positive attitude and ability to work well both independently and within a team environment
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following

The Research Technician is responsible for the execution of the farm research plan. Trial data collection, management, analysis and reporting. This individual will be required to perform different fieldwork related tasks as assigned and ensure that all elements of the fieldwork are flawlessly executed, while maintaining their own safety and the safety of the crew. The Research Technician may be required to operate equipment especially at the time of planting and harvesting provided they have the required skills.

Ability to think outside the box and to provide creative solutions.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Employee will be required to perform duties in an agricultural setting to include potato fields and potato storages.
  • Employee is expected to be open to workday with mixture of both indoor and outdoor work
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and telephone keyboard and talk or hear.
  • Requires visual acuity to focus on desktop and/or laptop computer screen.
  • Requires standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time, talking and listening.
  • Work demands may fluctuate seasonally related to farming cycles, especially during planting and harvesting.
