The Science Education Lab Manager will be involved in varied curricula provided by the teaching lab at the Michael Smith Laboratories (see bioteach.ubc.ca). This is an award-winning scientific literacy facility with a specific emphasis on molecular biology pedagogy, but is also well versed in a variety of general STEM topics that fit within social justice themes (climate change, pandemics, etc.), as well as underrepresented communities. The incumbent will directly engage in STEM educational programming, including development and delivery of instructional experiences to elementary and high school aged children, industry and government workshop participants. This role also includes managing the program\xe2\x80\x99s administration and teaching laboratory.Organizational Status
This position is within the Michael Smith Laboratories, an interdisciplinary research unit at UBC Vancouver. This position will report directly to Dr. David Ng, Professor of Teaching, and Director of the AMBL lab. They will work with a wide range of educational collaborators, and support the lab\xe2\x80\x99s large community of undergraduate and graduate assistants.Work PerformedSupport a variety of STEM outreach field trip programs that caters to a diverse range of audiences (public schools, industry, government, etc.).Responsible for the daily operations of the teaching laboratory, personnel onboarding and training, communication of lab safety guidelines, maintains laboratory infrastructure and supply inventories, and oversees equipment repairs.Implementation of molecular biology laboratory pedagogy and troubleshoots to find technical solutions for the university level molecular biology materials as well as the STEM outreach programming.Develop and implement new curriculum and educational research options, as well as program revisions as necessary, including adjusting instructional and learning strategies or materials.Design methods for program assessment with the goal of improving content and methodology, and pedagogical program objectives.Manages, and executes internal and external communication initiatives, this includes promotional content website, print, social media, print, and video.Acts as a point person in liaising and collaborating with other STEM outreach programs and research labs.Responsible for program scheduling, event planning, volunteer recruitment tasks, and communications with the teachers or participants.Hires student assistants, including writes job descriptions and interviews, and facilitates appointments and reappointments with department HR.Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position has a critical impact on the pedagogical and communication integrity of the teaching lab, and of the Michael Smith Laboratories. Furthermore, because of the education lab\xe2\x80\x99s excellent local, national, and international reputation and influence, the stakes of affecting this integrity are high. Errors in carrying out the responsibilities of this position can also lead to unsafe laboratory conditions, which can jeopardize the safety of university, K-12 students, staff, faculty, and other members of the general public.Supervision Received
The Science Education Lab Manager will receive general direction from Dr. David Ng, where priorities may be set. The position is collaborative in principle, such that the candidate must be able to work in a self-sufficient and accountable manner, with an independent ability to use in-depth knowledge to ensure excellence. Can set own targets depending on workload at different times of the year. Work will be reviewed for overall effectiveness and achievement of program objectives.Supervision Given
Manages student assistants, coordinating their time commitments, onboarding, reimbursement and feedback.Minimum Qualifications
University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one\xe2\x80\x99s own

Strong familiarity with molecular biology techniques, including significant direct experience with educational and/or training activities, particularly in the STEM outreach context. Excellent communication and organizational skills required. Strong familiarity with web platforms, and some basic bioinformatics experience is a plus. Knowledge and familiarity with university systems, policies and procedures is an asset. Interest and strong awareness in public understanding of science and social justice concepts, especially with regard to underrepresented communities is also encouraged.
