JOB PURPOSE:

This position is a knowledge translation, quality improvement and research coordinator position. Under general supervision, this KTR coordinator coordinates the provision of professional research and study, and knowledge translation/continuous quality improvement services, in support of Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department\xe2\x80\x99s specified medical research program as outlined in the annual research and knowledge translation plan and as guided by the Emergency Department Site director for research. The research component includes the screening, recruitment, care, and treatment of research subjects, and collection and analysis of research data in accordance with the established study protocols. The knowledge translation and quality improvement component includes the auditing of current practice against agreed standards, assistance with implementation of new guidelines, and the assessment of the methods and effects of planned service improvements. Overall the position will aim to improve adherence to hospital/departmental policies and established clinical procedures, standards, and practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in Quality Improvement and Knowledge Translation
  • Five (5) years of clinical research experience (including data collection and project coordination) required in an Emergency or Acute Care environment
  • Demonstrated ability of working in a fast paced environment
  • Knowledge and experience in research methodology
  • Five years appropriate clinical and/or professional experience in a hospital Emergency environment
  • Experience with patient recruitment and data collection
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge, skills and experience in preparing grant applications
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in working within a multidisciplinary team and/or framework
  • Must be able to accommodate flexible hours of work and on-call
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Experience in Randomized, Controlled Trials preferred
  • Current TCPS Core 2 certification
  • Completion of Diving into Clinical Trials? Sink or Swim
  • Nursing diploma; at least 5years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Current New Brunswick Nursing licensure.
  • Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Good work record.
  • Written and spoken competence in English is required.

  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of Health Canada Food and Drug Regulations, ICH-GCP Guidelines and FDA
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Willingness to learn new skills as required by the position.
REPORTING STRUCTURE

The KTR coordinator reports directly to the site director for research (Emergency Department).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION AND CQI
  • Collects quality improvement data through surveys, focus groups, and patient/physician meetings and establishes baseline performance measures to determine state of current processes.
  • Works within the framework of continuous quality improvement to identify issues related to delivery of service and the possible solution to these issues using standard quality-related tools.
  • Recommends changes designed to correct or improve processes and assists with the implementation of revised procedures.
  • Evaluates the effects of change on processes by collecting data on interventions, standardizes successful changes to processes, and establishes mechanisms for monitoring process parameters on a continual basis.
  • Identifies appropriate knowledge translation activities, such as briefings, educational sessions and other tools for employees in the Emergency Department and associated support departments.
  • Assesses barriers to knowledge use and implements appropriate knowledge translation interventions. Determines appropriate methodologies to evaluate effectiveness of knowledge translation interventions.
  • Adapts knowledge to context of the Emergency Department environment, monitors application of knowledge, and ensures sustained use of knowledge.
RESEARCH
  • Participates in and coordinates the planning, development, and implementation of research protocols in accordance with research and knowledge translation parameters.
  • Oversees the planning, scheduling, and implementation of day-to-day research activities and procedures, ensuring efficient workflow and adequate care and treatment of research subjects.
  • Plans and carries out programs for the recruitment, enrollment, and retention of clinical research subjects and/or volunteers; instructs subjects on treatment methods and protocol.
  • Establishes appropriate data collection systems and procedures, according to established research protocol.
  • Coordinates and monitors the collection, processing, and recording of clinical data and/or specimen samples, as required by established study protocol.
  • Ensures that all clinical activities are carried out in accordance with established research protocol and within acceptable clinical procedure and safety standards.
  • Increases the capacity and capability in applied health research while promoting a research-oriented culture.
  • Communicates with funding organizations to secure funding for research activities and assists with the application of research outcomes.
  • Provides collaboration and administrative coordination between investigators and ancillary departments, research subjects, sponsoring organizations, and/or regulating bodies.
  • Represents and promotes the objectives and activities of research studies to various internal and/or external constituencies, as appropriate.
  • Administers prescribed study medications, performs venipuncture, monitors vital signs, and/or performs other specialized nursing procedures, as appropriate to the specific needs of the study and individual subjects.
  • May oversee and guide the work of other research coordinators and/or support staff engaged in study activities.
  • Participates in the analysis and presentation of research results and conclusions.
  • Helps to foster an environment conducive to research activity in the Emergency Department.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by the site director for research.
