Job Description


JOB PURPOSE

Reporting to the Manager of Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR), the Supervisor provides leadership and direction in the daily operations of the department to ensure policies, procedures, and professional standards are adhered to and quality customer service is provided. Supervises Medical Device Reprocessing Technicians. Ensures provision of supplies, equipment, and instrumentation on both a hospital and region wide basis. Functions as a key member in the efficient operation of MDR, the Operating Room and other support areas, as an integral part of the health care team. May be required to travel to other MDR facilities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Graduation or successful completion of GED.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development.
  • CSA (Canadian Standards Association) certification in Medical Device Reprocessing required.
  • Must have demonstrated supervisory skills.
  • Supervisory training and/or experience will be considered as an asset.
  • Knowledge in medical terminology an asset.
  • Must have a minimum 2 years\' experience in Medical Device Reprocessing, with expertise in Operating Room instrumentation and case cart systems.
  • Must have working knowledge to use computer applications such as Meditech, ORSOS Computer System, Microsoft Applications (Excel, word, Outlook), Kronos/Dimensions, & the Internet. Testing will be conducted.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Canadian Standards and Practice for Medical Device Reprocessing.

DUTIES AND REPSONSIBILITES
  • Participates in and ensures the decontamination, processing, sterilization, and storage of instrumentation and supplies meets recommended standards.
  • Ensures safe efficient operation and maintenance of equipment used in MDR. Maintains preventative maintenance schedule and liaises with maintenance and biomedical engineering departments.
  • Ensures strict adherence to standards, policies, and procedures of MDR.
  • Remains current with new developments, trends, and research in the MDR field. Identifies and recommends practice changes to meet current standards.
  • Participates and supports in the education of staff members concerning policies and procedures, quality assurance programs, WHMIS, CSA & ORNAC standards and Infection Prevention & Control guidelines.
  • Participates in and supports educational sessions for MDR staff.
  • Ensures staff has a thorough knowledge of supplies and equipment in MDR.
  • Coordinates and/or presents at departmental meetings and in-service presentations. Provides informational meetings to update staff on present and future trends in MDR.
  • Maintains and orders supplies for the efficient running of the department.
  • Review and revise quotas of sterile supplies on an on-going basis.
  • Participates in the development and co-ordination of competency-based orientation program, training programs and continuing competency skill review.
  • Liaises with Materials Management, Operating Room, Maintenance, Clinical Engineering, Company representatives and multi-disciplinary health team stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and professional working relationships with staff and other departments.
  • Coordinates work schedule and staff to balance workload of department. Arranges for replacement staff for employee absences.
  • Oversees departmental workflow and adjusts staffing assignments to reflect departmental needs.
  • Participates in continuous quality management and quality improvement initiatives by completing and maintaining all associated tasks and documentation in an accurate, timely manner.
  • Provides manager with monthly reports and statistics.
  • Initiates incident reporting protocol when necessary.
  • Attends meetings as requested.
  • Receives and reconciles loaners, as well as repaired or new instruments coming into and out of department. Prepares items for shipping and maintains records as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Must be physically able to perform duties of job.
  • Ability to work efficiently under conditions with frequent interruptions and pressure of meeting deadlines.
  • May be required to travel to other MDR facilities in Zone 2.
  • May be required to cover sick calls if no staff available, at all sites.
