Safety and Compliance Manager
to lead our safety initiatives and ensure full regulatory compliance across our operations.
Position Summary
The Safety and Compliance Manager will oversee all aspects of safety, regulatory compliance, training, and risk management for our fleet and personnel. This role plays a critical part in maintaining our excellent safety record and ensuring compliance with Canadian and U.S. transportation regulations (DOT, FMCSA, CVOR, NSC).
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance
Ensure full compliance with federal, provincial, and state transportation regulations (DOT, FMCSA, CVOR, NSC).
Monitor regulatory updates and industry changes to keep policies and procedures current.
Maintain company ratings and operating authorities in good standing (e.g., DOT, CVOR).
Safety Program Management
Develop, implement, and enhance company-wide safety programs, policies, and procedures.
Conduct regular safety audits, workplace inspections, and risk assessments.
Promote a safety-first culture across the organization.
Driver and Staff Training
Organize and facilitate onboarding and ongoing training programs on safety protocols, Hours of Service (HOS), and compliance requirements.
Maintain up-to-date records of training, certifications, and qualifications.
Ensure drivers are fully briefed and compliant with cross-border requirements.
Incident and Accident Management
Lead investigations of collisions, violations, and near-miss incidents.
Prepare detailed incident reports and implement corrective/preventive actions.
Coordinate with insurance providers, authorities, and legal representatives as needed.
Documentation & Audits
Maintain and manage accurate compliance records, including driver qualification files, vehicle maintenance logs, and ELD/HOS records.
Prepare for and respond to internal audits, roadside inspections, and regulatory investigations.
Technology & Data Oversight
Manage electronic logging device (ELD) systems and fleet safety software (e.g., Samsara).
Monitor and analyze data trends to improve safety performance and reduce risk.
Qualifications
Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a similar role within the transportation industry.
In-depth knowledge of U.S. and Canadian transportation regulations (DOT, FMCSA, CVOR, NSC).
Experience managing long-haul and cross-border safety and compliance programs.
Proficiency with ELD systems and compliance software (Samsara experience is a plus).
Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Certification in Transportation Safety, Compliance, or related field is an asset.
