Safety AdvisorPlease note that a strong internal candidate has been identified.The Safety Advisor is an OHS specialist and practitioner implementing the USask Safety Management Systems in USask colleges and units, performing incident management and investigation processes, managing Workers Compensation Board (WCB) claims and leading injury prevention strategies. The Safety Advisor develops and delivers of safety training. This position leads and supports several safety programs and initiatives to ensure the University is meeting or exceeding regulatory compliance requirements and responsibilities, and the work will pivot to the strategic directions of Safety Resources and the departments and units of USask.The Safety Advisor works with management, contractors and other USask leaders to implement Health and Safety systems and programs and ensure regulatory compliance. The position works with stakeholders to meet applicable legislative requirements, implement university policies and procedures in health and safety, and promotes evolving industry best practices. Working in an environment of continuous change, shifting priorities and frequent interruptions, work volume can be high and complex requiring the ability to manage multiple activities and competing priorities. The position must exercise independent critical thinking, analytical and process driven problem solving, and discretionary decision making to manage competing requests and priorities.The Safety Advisor could work in potentially hazardous environments (such as construction sites and trades work areas) and may be asked to respond to and assist with emergencies both during regular business hours as well as after hours.Confidentiality and discretion is required as this position is privy to some confidential and sensitive information such as that regulated by HIPA and/or Saskatchewan employment and privacy legislation.Accountabilities

  • Implementing Safety Management Systems
  • Reducing the injury rates of USask Dept/Units, with focus on priority areas as directed by Safety Resources management
  • Conducting incident investigations, reports, and implementing corrective measures
  • Leading the development of injury prevention activities and training opportunities
  • Providing oversite and case management for WCB recordable incidents and injuries
  • Managing files for the WCB processes, communication, and reporting requirements
  • Liaising with and managing regulators
  • Developing and communicating reports of incident/injury statistics
  • Developing and delivering safety training
  • Ensuring communications are effective, both internally and externally
  • Other assigned duties
Education and Experience
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety is preferred.
  • Experience in health and safety and with extensive knowledge of occupational health and safety standards, regulations, and legislation is required.
  • Experience conducting investigations and experience communicating finding and recommendations, providing health and safety training, managing WCB, and implementing Safety Management Systems is required.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) Designation are preferred.
  • Experience working in a unionized and/or post-secondary academic environment would be considered as assets for this position.
