Position Overview

Department of Geography is currently seeking a Full-time Regular RS/GIS Analyst.

Reporting to the Department Manager and working closely with the Department Head, the RS/GIS Specialist will be responsible for providing technical support and assistance to faculty and students in Geography. Work will be performed with minimal supervision. A high level of technical competency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial analysis is essential along with strong communication abilities.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Work with Arts IT to ensure appropriate software is installed and operational and that course-related lab exercises are executed to ensure functionality in preparation for courses and labs.
  • Ensure that technical support related to GIS, remote sensing and statistics is provided in a timely and effective manner to students and faculty for courses and research projects.
  • Set-up, document and provide instruction as directed in areas of remote sensing, spatial statistics, and GIS courses.
  • Effectively act as a liaison with IT, software vendors, and other campus units to facilitate high-level of service to students and faculty.
  • Answer questions on geographical methodologies from faculty and students, ensuring accuracy and clarity to facilitate understanding
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Geography or a related discipline with some post-graduate industry or academic experience.
  • Strong theoretical knowledge and technical skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and statistics.
  • Demonstrated experience with the following software packages is a necessity: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, QGIS, ENVI & IDL, Catalyst (formerly PCI Geomatica), Google Earth Engine, SPSS, R, Microsoft Office products, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and a respectful, responsive interpersonal style are essential.
  • Familiarity with virtual computing, license servers and license management. Knowledge of, and experience with, Geography undergraduate and graduate level GIS and remote sensing courses.
  • Master of GIS, a Master of Science in Geography or related discipline.
  • Understanding of the principles of computer programming and experience with Python, Java, IDL, R, and any other programming language.
  • Experience using and supporting both PC and macOS/Linux operating systems.
