Position Description
The Department of Geography at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure-track transdisciplinary position with a focus on Mountain Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching and Research). The successful candidate will be provided a five-year research-intensive term with reduced teaching commitments.

Mountains are places of collective environmental, ecological, and human (physical and mental) health that are subject to a variety of pressures from human development and climate change. The incumbent will be expected to advance University of Calgary\'s leadership in mountain research through a program that fosters convergent studies around topics that may include, among others: climate, environmental, and social change in mountain regions; adaptation and sustainability research; mountain tourism; and Indigenous understanding of mountain environments as places of cultural, spiritual, and environmental significance.
The position will catalyze existing research strengths focused on mountains in the Departments of Geography (Faculty of Arts), Earth, Energy, and Environment (Faculty of Science), Civil Engineering (Schulich School of Engineering) and in the School of Public Policy. Ideally, the candidate will also participate in One Health or Water Hub initiatives or , the University\'s Indigenous strategy, and will create training opportunities at the University\'s field stations in Kananaskis and Kluane.
The appointments will commence July 1, 2024, or at a mutually agreeable date.
We are seeking a scholar who will establish a transdisciplinary research program and demonstrate leadership in Mountain Studies. Applicants are expected to teach and conduct research at the intersection of human and physical sciences around mountains and be responsive to diverse methodologies. Preference will be given to candidates whose research focuses on human relationships to and/or human impacts on mountain environments. We especially invite candidates who incorporate diverse perspectives around complex environmental, ecological, and human issues in mountain environments. Experience working with government, non-governmental institutions, and/or mountain-based communities is considered an asset.
In addition to maintaining an active, funded research program, the successful candidate will be expected to supervise graduate and/or undergraduate students, teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in their areas of specialization, and collaborate with fellow transdisciplinary scholars. As well, the successful candidate will foster alliances of research and teaching among mountain scholars at the University of Calgary and beyond, especially those undertaking training and research at the University of Calgary\'s mountain research stations (Kluane, Kananaskis), ultimately leading to sustainable, transdisciplinary excellence in Mountain Studies.
