Royalty Accountant

Toronto, ON, Canada

Job Description

Royalty Accountant (6-month Contract)

As a team of dedicated book-loving professionals, we discover, shape, and share content that nurtures thoughts, dreams, and conversations around the globe, ensuring that both new and established voices are heard.

We are actively seeking to add team members from communities with lived experiences of marginalization and underrepresentation. We respect and value each individual and their lived experiences and are committed to creating a more diverse team and establishing a culture of belonging. If you self-identify as Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, a member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community or another marginalized group, we strongly encourage you to apply.

We're looking for a Royalty Accountant to join our team.

Our royalty team plays an integral role in our commitment to unrivalled author care. Are you interested in learning more about finance in a creative industry? If this describes you, consider joining us on an exciting journey as we write new chapters of Penguin Random House Canada's culture and employee experience story together.

Your contribution to the story:

Working closely with colleagues from across departments, including finance, contracts, rights, and publishing, you will help to deliver on our commitment to provide the best experience for our authors.

What you'll do:

  • Review and ensure the accuracy of advances, territory rights, royalty rates, and other information for new publishing contracts.
  • Analyze and ensure the accuracy of royalty information provided to authors, agents and other contract participants.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to determine the status of rights and royalty payments.
  • Process advance and author earnings payments.
  • File and issue tax forms to all royalty-earning recipients.
  • Complete monthly royalty reporting tasks, including reconciliation to the general ledger and preparation of journal entries.
Experience and knowledge you'll bring (qualifications):
  • 3+ years of education or experience in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Experience in royalties accounting in a creative industry is an asset.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and balance multiple responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
  • An inclusive approach to your work, supported by well-developed cultural competency skills and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with confidential information using sound judgment and discretion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with acute attention to detail.
  • A solution-focused approach coupled with an eye toward continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency with Windows OS, Microsoft Office Suite, and online collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams. Experience with SAP is not necessary but it will be an asset.
  • Enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization are considered a plus.
  • And of course, a love for books!
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and their resume by November 6, 2022. We appreciate the interest of all applicants; however, only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

Please contact Human Resources at or 416-364-4449 if you need accommodation at any stage of the application process or want more information on our accommodation policies.
