Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Working within the Risk, Legal & Privacy portfolio, and reporting to the Chief Risk, Legal & Privacy Officer, the Risk Manager provides strategic leadership to drive the hospital's risk management and loss prevention program with the primary objectives of protecting the hospital's reputation and assets, continuous improvement, fostering a culture of compliance, and risk identification / management. The Risk Manager will build risk and control awareness by helping leaders embed robust risk management across all areas of the hospital. They will provide leadership in enterprise risk management, claims management, internal audit, risk management consultation and insurance program management.

With a focus on innovation and service excellence, the Risk Manager provides operational leadership to the Risk Management team and function, providing and overseeing:

  • risk management consultation services to support leaders in the assessment of risks associated with new services, programs, delivery models, partnerships and collaborations.
  • centralized advisory services in risk management including medical-legal issues, insurance, safety, quality of care, consent / capacity, privacy and interactions with law enforcement and other regulatory bodies.
  • management of liability and property insurance programs, ensuring appropriate levels of insurance coverage, meeting insurer requirements (i.e. Risk Assessment Checklist program, annual submissions), tracking insurance costs, and liaising with third party providers and brokerages.
  • claims management including liaising with the insurer and hospital staff.
In collaboration with the Chief Risk, Legal & Privacy Officer, the Risk Manager will lead the ongoing development of the hospital's enterprise risk management program and will act as a champion for enterprise risk management, maintaining the enterprise risk registry and serving as the point of contact for follow up on risk evaluation and mitigation strategies. They will implement internal audit and other compliance programs to identify and assess risk, and will support risk owners in the development and tracking of audit responses to address identified gaps and risks.

The Risk Manager will establish and manage collaborative relationships with all levels of the hospital, members of the St. Joseph's Health System, and external industry partners. They will support the reporting of enterprise risk, compliance and governance matters to Senior Management and the Board of Trustees, and will monitor and champion industry best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
  • Master's degree in a health sciences, healthcare / public / business administration, nursing or a related field; or a law degree required.
  • Risk Management certificate preferred.
Work Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years risk management experience in health care or related industry / broader public sector.
  • Knowledge of risk management principles and legislation and regulations governing public hospitals.
  • Demonstrated success in advancing enterprise risk or compliance programs in a complex environment.
  • Demonstrated ability of successfully managing in a fast-paced environment with multiple and competing priorities that must be addressed.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal and listening skills;
  • Strong negotiating, influencing and consulting skills, and understanding of when policy or practice must be followed and when deviations or concessions can be made.
  • Experience in board governance, an asset.
  • Knowledge of IT system for claims management, risk registries, etc.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of applications.
HOURS OF WORK:
Monday-Friday, days
