Duties

The Resource Management Officer II (EG-04) takes a lead role in human-wildlife coexistence (HWC) operations and works as part of the Resource Conservation team to ensure ecological integrity and the safety and well-being of both the ecosystem and the public in Jasper National Park.




Duties include conducting active wildlife management operations, including managing wildlife and people in controlled and uncontrolled environments. The EG-04 is also responsible for supervising multiple operational staff, including training, directing workflow, mentoring, and performance management. Additional responsibilities include projects related to human wildlife coexistence strategies, HWC protocols and procedures, wildlife monitoring, wildlife data management and analysis, and other work to address existing and emerging HWC issues. The EG-04 will work within a team to make evidence-based risk assessments and wildlife management decisions using knowledge of wildlife behavior, contemporary wildlife management methods, and ecological concepts.



The EG-04 will be involved in collaborations and communications with other Parks Canada teams (within and outside of Resource Conservation), stakeholders, and the general public. The position includes office and administrative duties related to scheduling, finance, and human resources, as well as equipment maintenance. The EG-04 may also be an active participant in a multifaceted team providing emergency support to other functions such as Visitor Safety and Fire Management.

EDUCATION:

Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with specialization in environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, zoology, botany, or forestry) or other discipline relevant to the position; or an acceptable combination of a post-secondary diploma related to environmental and/or natural sciences and recenttraining and experience in a field related to the position.


An acceptable combination of a diploma and training/experience means a completed post-secondary diploma in a relevant field and a minimum of 2 years working in the environmental and/or natural sciences field on active management operations, ecological monitoring and applied scientific research.

Recent means within the last 5 years.
Degree equivalency


OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATIONS:

Valid PAL (Possession and Acquisition License) Canadian Firearms Safety Course
EXPERIENCE:

Significant experience participating in wildlife management activities including actively managing human wildlife conflict situations and capture, immobilization, and handling of wildlife;
Significant experience supervising, leading and mentoring staff;
Significant experience leading two or more phases of research, monitoring, or wildlife management projects (e.g., project development, data collection, analysis, reporting);
Experience working collaboratively on projects and/or decision-making within a diverse team; Experience traveling and/or working in the field, including various types of terrain; Experience preparing reports, protocols, communications, and presentations; Experience in the application of technical equipment, procedures, and protocols specific to ecology and wildlife management; Experience with and operation of non-restricted firearms.


Significant experience means experience that was as a core part of the candidate's employment and is normally acquired over a period of two (2) years.

KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of a variety of wildlife monitoring and wildlife management techniques and ecological principles; Knowledge of methodology and procedures for scientific testing and data/sample collection; Knowledge of terrestrial environment, vegetation and wildlife characteristics, as well as terrain and weather conditions specific to Jasper National Parks;
ABILITIES:

Ability to conduct analysis and manage spatial and non-spatial data using various automated software and applications; Ability to prepare and present scientific reports, plans, protocols, and training modules, and to communicate with a variety of audiences using a variety of techniques; Ability to plan, supervise, train and monitor the work of staff and volunteers.

Chemical Immobilization of Wildlife certification; Advanced Search and Rescue and First Aid certifications (e.g., swift water rescue, avalanche safety, wilderness first aid); Incident Command System (ICS) training (please indicate level); Advanced firearms certification.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Experience working with a variety of wildlife management techniques (e.g., hazing, aversive conditioning, capture, immobilization, euthanization, radio-collaring, posting warning and closures, use of wildlife deterrents, wildlife necropsies); Experience effectively participating as part of an emergency response team (human/wildlife conflict, search and rescue, fire management, spill response); Experience managing people in controlled or uncontrolled environments; Experience working cooperatively with Indigenous Peoples, stakeholders or the public; Experience preparing for and delivering effective field work, data collection, and data management; Experience with Financial Management (budgets, purchasing, payments).
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment; Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation; Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required; Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.
