: Residential Support Worker

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Residential Director, the Residential Support Worker will perform a variety of tasks at First Steps related to the support of the residents and their babies. The Residential Support Worker will ensure a safe and supportive environment by guiding, mentoring, teaching, and assisting in all aspects of the health and wellness of the residents and their babies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Models, guides, assists, and, where required, completes tasks for the residents and their babies. Monitors residents and their babies regularly. Ensures babies are properly cared for by modeling appropriate behaviour and care techniques. Sets goals with residents and monitors progression, provides support as needed. Assists with the preparation and serving of meals; joins residents and their babies at mealtimes. Provides reassurance to labouring residents and prepares them for travel and admission to the hospital. Monitors signs of emotional and developmental issues in children and notifies parents, guardians, or authorities of concerns when necessary. Accounts for the whereabouts of residents and their babies at all times. Dispenses medications in accordance with policy. Assists with the maintenance of the residence by cleaning, picking up supplies, and taking out the garbage. Maintains records on individual residents and babies including daily observations, daily room checks, activities, meals served, and medications administered. Identifies inappropriate resident behaviours, plans and administers appropriate discipline, and reports the actions and outcomes to the Residential Director.. Orientates and supervises student learners as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:

Excellent communication skills with residents, other First Steps employees, community partners, and volunteers. Ability to be patient and understanding when working with residents and their babies. Extensive knowledge of infant care principles and procedures. Ability to relate to residents and their children and make the residence an enjoyable atmosphere.
Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a post secondary education program required. At least one year of related experience considered an asset Certification in first aid and CPR required; must be maintained by obtaining recertification as necessary. Must pass criminal background check and have clearance to work with the vulnerable sector. Must pass SD record check.
Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of standing and frequent bending. Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time. Will be exposed to illness-causing bacteria and viruses.
Job Type: Casual

Pay: $21.79 per hour

12 hour shift Day shift Holidays Night shift On call
