Job Description


INTRO
The Applied Physics Branch of Canada’s leading nuclear science and technology organization has multiple openings for technologists in electronics and mechanical systems. Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is a world leader in developing peaceful and innovative applications from nuclear technology through its expertise in physics, metallurgy, chemistry, biology and engineering. CNL’s Applied Physics Branch undertakes simulations and modelling, experimental measurements, operational support, and novel technology development, in program areas primarily related to Safety and Security. Safety and Security in this context means the monitoring, detection, enforcement and policies to protect Canadians, Canada’s borders, and support Canada’s participation in international activities. While this often falls under Nuclear Safety & Security, the application of nuclear methods, tools and related technologies to all aspects of the safety & security of Canadians is also pursued. The successful individual will have a passion for producing high quality and innovative technology, have strong problem-solving skills, is responsive to user needs, and driven to produce products that exceed customer expectations.
DUTIES
General duties of CNL technologists include several of the following and commensurate with grade level of appointment:

  • Contribute to the safe and effective operation of the laboratories for which they are assigned responsibility
  • Conducting laboratory experiments, maintaining experimental work records, collecting and analyzing data and summarizing and reporting results
  • Develop data analysis tools, particularly for the systems developed
  • Remain current on technological advances and learn new technical skills on a continuous basis
  • Manage small technical projects and supervise technical staff
  • Handling and processing experimental samples
  • Maintenance of laboratory software and equipment (requiring familiarity with technical manuals and software applications), including performing instrument calibrations, maintenance and QA operations when required
  • Interact with vendors regarding ordering/troubleshooting equipment as well as external collaborators where necessary to share ideas, methods or results.
  • Work in a multi-discipline team environment, maintain a clear focus on team goals, and establish good rapport with groups and individuals of many diverse professions is required.
  • Solve technical problems, make recommendations on strategic and technical issues, and prepare work plans with some supervision or guidance.
  • Proper planning of experiments, ensure availability of necessary equipment and personnel, and sufficient background knowledge of procedures/science involved are necessary prior to start of the procedure.
  • Consult with co-workers and supervision as required, and makes recommendations for improvements to processes and procedures.
  • Prepares own detailed work plans and executes with minimal supervision.
  • Possess general computer literacy in word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office suite of applications)
  • Lab and office work at Chalk River Laboratories, with the possibility of some remote work.

Multiple hires are anticipated in different technological area, duties will also include one or more of the following depending on selected function:
  • Develop instrumentation and control systems, typically for novel experimental apparatus and for deployable systems.
  • Develop and design mechanical apparatus needed for experimental set-ups.
  • Mechanical design capabilities to develop and construct experimental apparatus and test configurations. Can include support structures, enclosures, shielding, mounting systems.
  • Understanding of mechanical equipment such as drive systems, motors, pumps and hoisting & rigging (within limits of qualification).
  • Establish and define design requirements.
  • Work with radiological materials.
  • Work with CNL Radiation Protection personnel to define and

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position (e.g., electrical, electronics, mechanical design)
or
  • Undergraduate degree in physics or engineering from a university of recognized standing

Commensurate with level of appointment and technical area, successful candidates will have a minimum of 2-3 years of demonstrated experience and skills in one or more the following:
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills.
  • Electronics including circuit design, testing/troubleshooting, development. Working knowledge of both analog and digital circuitry, including microcontrollers is desired.
  • Understanding of electrical work and requirements (excluding site infrastructure) needed to support instrumentation development and lab work.
  • Programming for data acquisition systems and data analysis.
  • Mechanical design capabilities to develop and construct experimental apparatus and test configurations. Can include support structures, enclosures, shielding, mounting systems.
  • Have or be willing to acquire the knowledge required to work in radiological environments, possibly including handling radioactive sources, in compliance with CNL’s Radiation Protection Program.
  • Required to have or obtain Group 3 Radiation Protection qualification.
  • Experience working with support groups such as engineering, trades, onsite transport, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Operational Safety and Health, etc. will be considered an asset.
  • General computer literacy in word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office suite of applications).
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
