Platform: Physical Sciences

Reporting to: Dr. Brian Courtney, Sunnybrook Research Institute;

We are seeking one (1) Research Software Developer to join our team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • incorporate advanced Artificial Intelligence and image/signal processing capabilities into medical imaging systems
  • contribute towards cutting-edge biomedical research
  • develop technologies that could transform cardiac care and improve patient outcomes
Dr. Brian Courtney\xe2\x80\x99s group at Sunnybrook Research Institute develops ultrasound and optical imaging technologies to guide cardiovascular procedures. Through close collaboration with our industry partners, the team\xe2\x80\x99s focus is on the development and translation of transformative research in cardiac image guidance and visualization, vascular disease, medical device design and the broader development of medical innovations targeted to solve clinical problems. Supported by $49 million from the Strategic Innovation Fund, Sunnybrook is leading a pan-Canada network (INOVAIT) that facilitates the integration of AI and image-guided therapies.

Our team at Sunnybrook invented the world\xe2\x80\x99s first commercially available hybrid intravascular imaging system, and the world\xe2\x80\x99s first mechanically scanning 3D intracardiac echo system. The successful candidate will contribute towards further innovations for our hybrid intravascular imaging systems.

Required Qualifications
  • At minimum, a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or an equivalent program related to the development of machine learning and medical imaging software. Advanced post-graduate education, such as Master\xe2\x80\x99s/PhD level training is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in research & development using computer vision techniques such as object recognition and segmentation
  • Strong experience with machine learning (eg. clustering, SVMs) and deep learning models, such as CNNs
  • Experience with designing algorithms for image processing and segmentation
  • Familiarity with computer vision libraries and machine learning development platforms, such as OpenCV, PyTorch, TensorFlow or Matlab.
  • Proficient technical writing and strong communication skills
  • Highly motivated, organized, and able to work independently when needed
Other Desirable Qualifications
  • Hands on experience in medical imaging technologies, particularly ultrasound and optical imaging (OCT)
  • Proficiency with C# (.Net Framework) programming with a deep understanding of OOD/ OOP and design patterns is an asset.
  • Experience delivering production-quality software
  • Knowledgeable with current state-of-the-art in signal processing, RF signal denoising and AI methods for signal/image noise suppression
JOB DUTIES
  • Develop image processing and machine learning tools for multimodality image registration, plaque characterization and medical image denoising, with particular focus on vascular imaging (intravascular ultrasound, OCT, angiograms, histology).
  • Prepare data for model training and testing (data selection, pre-processing, co-registration, labeling, etc).
  • Design and execute test plans, and assist in benchtop and preclinical experiments
  • Assist in the development and protection of new intellectual property and scientific dissemination of research results
  • Interact closely with commercial partners of the lab to integrate algorithms and software into commercial products
  • Observe Hospital and department rules and regulations, policies, procedures, practices and current legislation, in particular the Human Rights Code regarding discrimination and harassment, and safety procedures
  • Ensure that the confidentiality of patient, employee, and hospital information is maintained at all times
  • Work cooperatively and constructively with other members of the staff
  • Perform the above functions in a manner that reflects the hospital philosophy and mission of service, while promoting and maintaining good public relations with patients, visitors, and Hospital staff.
