Research Intern- Generating Ag Tech Ideas and Solutions

Dr. Terry Fonstad and Tate Cao in the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan are looking for a highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students to join our research team. The candidate will be employed to gather cumulative data on how current cow-calf and forage operations in Saskatchewan are configured and what common elements of operational process, seasonal tasking, footprint, infrastructure, breed and herd numbers are pertinent to assemble for domain familiarity and expertise in developing digital technologies that are meaningful and impactful in livestock farms. In other words, \xe2\x80\x9cfind the problems that need solving\xe2\x80\x9d.

In the appointment of Research Assistant, your general duties and responsibilities will be

Students will perform one or two of the following tasks based on the qualification and skill level. Please highlight how your skill will fit the tasks * Student will classify the different types of typical cattle producers in Saskatchewan based on geographical location and product.

  • The student will also work in collaboration with other interns to define the daily operational process and tasks in cattle operation. It includes but is not limited to lost time, revenue, and relevant decision making process
  • The student will conduct literature review to identify technologies that can be used used to improve efficiency, solve problems, and save time and money. How can decision making be improved through smart farming technologies.
  • The student will conduct economics analysis on the value of potential technologies.
Your general location of work will be in the College of Engineering and your will report to Dr. Terry Fonstad and Tate Cao

Required Number of Hours: To be determined at the time of hire, based on experience and qualification.

Duration of Employment: This is a term position for the duration of 8 months to 1 year, starting on April 1, 2023.

Qualifications (Skills and Abilities)
Student interns with an engineering or agriculture background and an interest/background in agriculture or and background in ag economics. The students will work with cattle operations and the users through out a typical day in various seasons. Interested candidates should have a graduate degree in engineering, soil science, agricultural economics or other closely related engineering or science programs. Applicants must meet the English proficiency requirements.

Farming backgrounds, especially in cattle industry are considered strong asset.

Experience in product development and user interview are preferred.

You must be registered in a graduate program.
