In an acute care setting, we provide opportunities in bedside research, health outcomes research, and scholarly pursuit in medical education.
We offer a specialist training program in Emergency Medicine accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. We also train residents in the Emergency Medicine Certification program of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.PositionThe purpose of this position is to provide support to refining and deploying an open-source, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered scribe tool, and evaluating its impacts on physician and system-level outcomes. Tailored for universal accessibility, the AI scribe has shown promise in pilot studies resulting in enhanced job satisfaction and efficiency among early physician users.This project, in collaboration with Alberta Health Services (AHS) and national stakeholders, aims to improve the AI-scribe solution based on physician feedback and perform rigorous implementation and evaluation studies in three EDs (one regional and two urban). The project will emphasize proactive policy development for AI use in clinical settings, along with training and support for physicians.Our approach ensures comprehensive data availability, physician-led oversight, and detailed implementation and outcome assessments, aligning with the needs of patients, doctors, and the healthcare system.DutiesResearch Coordinator (50%)

  • Assist the Pls with pre-study work including ethics and operational approvals
  • Assist the PIs with recruitment material including consent forms, case report forms (CRFs) and study logs
  • Conduct screening and recruitment of potential study participants in the emergency department, including obtaining consent and performing study-specific assessments
  • Conduct data collection and CRF completion, study monitoring, and data query resolution
  • Work with investigators and lead study sites regarding study termination, compliance, monitoring, and data query resolution
  • Ensure appropriate retention of study files and materials
  • Report adverse events promptly and accurately as described by the research protocol
  • Prepare and assist with site visits by monitors
  • Ensure the GCP guidelines are followed
Project Management/Team Lead (50%)
  • Ensure all aspects of projects are performed to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Tri-Council Policy Statement Guidelines (TCPS2), Health Canada
  • Develop and implement work plans to achieve project goals and create, manage and track milestones and timeline
  • Oversee the ethics submission to the Research Ethics Board (initial submission, amendments, renewals, safety reports, applicable updates) and resolve all program issues addressed by the ethics review
  • Based on study protocols, establish priorities for the project for the life cycle of the protocol from implementation to close-out
  • Provide support and advice to partners as required and facilitate coordination and cooperation among partners
  • Complete regulatory applications and operational approvals to governing bodies such as Health Canada, NACTRAC, Covenant Health, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the University of Alberta (UofA).
  • Design and develop project materials including consent form templates, operation manuals, study aides, questionnaires, and data collection forms that adhere to study protocols
  • Coordinate and manage data activities including collection, entry, verification, and development of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Address questions and concerns from program sites as related to the application of the protocol and completion of data collection forms
  • Report adverse events to the Pls, HREB, Health Canada, monitors, and sponsors in a timely manner
  • Ensure all documents are in place for closing out of the study/trial and prepare for site visits with Study Monitors
  • Train new research staff
  • Ensure all research team members are trained on SOPs
Qualifications
  • Master\'s degree in a health-related area and/or business or other equivalent preparation. A combination of related experience and education may be considered
  • Five to seven years of progressive experience in project management, along with clinical or administrative experience in a healthcare environment required. Three to five years combined experience in team building and managing personnel, students, and complex initiatives. Equivalencies will be considered
  • Project management certification would be an asset, as would performance improvement, health services planning, or system design training
  • Knowledge of administrative structures, policies, and procedures within the University of Alberta, as well as Alberta Health Services (AHS). Knowledge and experience dealing with various levels of government and private sector companies
  • Strong planning, organization, and decision-making capabilities with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, resolve conflicts and solve problems with minimum supervision
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills to provide advice and direction, outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills to complement working in a team environment
  • Expert facilitation skills and ability to lead strategic planning and build consensus among stakeholders with multiple points of view and develop an operational plan that advances organizational objectives
  • Demonstrated financial management, analysis and reporting skills
  • Proficiency with innovation technology and working knowledge of various programs and information skills, including Microsoft Office applications, PeopleSoft, Research Grant Reporting, E-Mail, etc. A working knowledge of Website management applications preferred
  • Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence applications such as Large Language Models would be an asset
  • Experience with AHS information systems (e.g. Connect Care) would be an asset
  • Working knowledge of the Python programming language is strongly preferred
  • Willingness to introduce and become involved in emerging electronic communication strategies, e.g., telehealth, webinars, social media, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom
  • Knowledge of quality improvement, and skills to make and apply evidence-informed decisions
  • Flexible, professional, and willing to take initiative
