Department Summary:



The Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta is a major academic and clinical arm dedicated to advancing child health through a three-fold mission: providing state-of-the-art clinical care for infants, children and youth (in partnership with the Stollery Children's Hospital and regional services), educating the next generation of physicians, specialists and researchers, and conducting innovative research that drives improvements in pediatric medicine.



Position Summary:



Dr. Andrea Haqq is recruiting a full-time Research Coordinator to support the program's research activities. The Research Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating participant recruitment, data collection, analysis, literature reviews, peer engagement, and reporting. They will collaborate closely with the project team, partners, and service providers to prepare research proposals, ethics submissions, community reports, scientific publications, and other dissemination materials. The Research Coordinator will play a key role in providing day-to-day oversight for activities done by graduate students involved in the research program, ensuring high-quality training and development. The position also involves preparing biospecimen collection and processing protocols and overseeing the processing and management of biospecimens according to established protocols and ensuring quality control throughout all stages. The successful candidate will support the monitoring and implementation of clinical trials, including protocol adherence, regulatory compliance, and coordination with clinical and research staff.



The ideal candidate will have strong quantitative research skills with human populations, experience with pediatric populations, and the ability to work independently with precision and accountability. Critical to this role is the ability to produce high-quality reports and documentation in a timely manner, ensuring that research timelines, regulatory requirements, and project milestones are consistently met without delay.

Manage organizational and operational functions, including financial oversight, meeting logistics, file management, and communication with internal and external stakeholders. Prepare and review research-related documents such as ethics applications, grant proposals, study protocols, progress, and financial reports. Oversee participant recruitment, data collection, entry, cleaning, and preliminary quantitative analysis to ensure data integrity and study compliance. Develop and maintain research databases to support efficient data management and retrieval. Draft and edit manuscripts, scientific reports, and lay summaries for dissemination to diverse audiences. Provide leadership and mentorship to trainees and research assistants, supporting professional development and quality research output. Serve as a critical liaison across multidisciplinary teams, facilitating collaboration and ensuring alignment with project goals.

Minimum

Master's degree (MSc) in a relevant field. Demonstrated history of contributing to scientific manuscripts and peer-reviewed publications is an asset. Excellent communication skills (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, time management and independent work initiative. Ability to liaise effectively with a variety of internal and external research stakeholders. Exceptional attention to detail and a high level of diligence in all aspects of research coordination. Proven ability to work efficiently, ethically, and professionally--both independently and as part of a collaborative team--while managing multiple concurrent tasks and competing timelines. Police information check and vulnerable sector check is required (The successful applicant will be reimbursed for this cost).

Preferred

Experience in pediatric clinical research, particularly in the areas of obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, Prader-Willi Syndrome and other genetic forms of childhood obesity. 3-5 years prior research and research administrative experience, with demonstrated ability to support study coordination, data management, and research compliance processes. Experience with a broad range of research methodologies is preferred, with particular emphasis on quantitative research design, statistical analysis, and data collection and interpretation. Experience with tools such as REDCap, SPSS, and SAS is an asset. Knowledge of the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services policies and procedures would be an asset.
