Working for the Department of Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences is the largest department in the Faculty of Science, made up of over 100 full-time faculty members, adjuncts and professors emeriti, nearly 50 support staff, 250 graduate students and nearly 1800 undergraduate students. The department covers a wide range of research areas including botany, entomology, paleontology, genetics and microbiology.
Position Summary
This position provides research and technical support for field- and lab-based investigations of aquatic systems. It involves planning and leading fieldwork, overseeing data collection, and conducting advanced data analyses, as well as contributing to the creation of scientific papers under the guidance of the PI. Responsibilities include maintaining specialized lab equipment, developing and updating safety and analytical protocols, and training students and collaborators in laboratory techniques. The Research Coordinator may support project funding proposals and project reporting to funding agencies. Additionally, the Research Coordinator plays an important role in managing long-term research databases and assisting with knowledge translation through community reporting tools.
Duties
Planning and leading fieldwork in northern Alberta and the southern NWT
Summarizing, analyzing, and organizing data for publication, including GIS-based spatial analyses and use of R for statistical analyses
Overseeing the maintenance, calibration, and operation of specialized lab equipment, including a Horiba Aqualog, Shimadzu TOC5000A, Milli-Q IQ7000, and Apollo AS-C3 DIC analyzer
Maintaining and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all lab equipment and processes
Training students and collaborators in the use of specialized lab equipment and experimental methodologies
Assisting with the writing and organization of new research proposals, ensuring proposals align with funding agency guidelines and team objectives
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum training required is an MSc degree in the earth or environmental sciences, or aquatic ecology / aquatic biogeochemistry with 6-12 months of field work and laboratory experience
The candidate should be familiar with MS Office, ArcGIS Pro, and R
The candidate should have the ability to obtain first aid and lab safety certifications
Preferred Qualifications
Experience running and maintaining lab equipment, including a Horiba Aqualog, Shimadzu TOC Analyzer, and MilliQ system
Experience with scientific publication
Experience training others for work in a lab or field setting
