Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Interventional Pulmonary Medicine research program consists of a variety of industry and investigator lead clinical research studies in this field. The research coordinator will be responsible for the day to day activities of specified research projects within the Interventional Pulmonary Medicine research group.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ensure optimal communication between study subjects, the research team and other departments and organizations with involvement in the study
  • Ensure accurate data collection, including the administration of study related questionnaires
  • Ensure patient safety, maintain confidentiality, follow study and site protocols and adhere to study timelines
  • Conduct studies in accordance with protocols and GCP guidelines and assess conformity on a continuous basis
  • Assist with other experiments according to level of skill and expertise
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with patients, investigators (respirologists), other study coordinators, clinic staff, administrative staff, regulatory agencies and sponsor and pharmaceutical representatives as required for the conduct of clinical trials
  • Screen and recruit patients for ongoing studies in a timely manner
  • Coordinate study related patient activities efficiently and according to protocol
  • Complete paper and electronic Case Report Forms (CRFs) as required and resolve queries
  • Report Adverse Events (AE) and Serious Adverse Events (SAE) to the sponsor and the University of Calgary in a timely manner
  • Organize, assist and prepare for site initiation, monitoring, close out and regulatory visits as required
  • Thoroughly explain and answer any questions regarding various clinical trials and the informed consent process to patients in accordance with GCP guidelines
  • Under limited supervision & direction of the PI, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Masters degree or health professional degree, required in Health Sciences or related fields in addition to experience in research methods and research trials involving patients/human subjects
  • Minimum 5 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • Knowledge on respiratory diseases (including smoking related diseases), lung cancer and lung cancer screening, smoking cessation counseling and CT reporting (imaging/interpretation/
  • findings)
  • Strong organizational and communications (verbal and written) skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Ability to perform moderate manual activities
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
  • Work with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
