Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Student Researcher. This Student Casual Hourly Part-time position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary is committed to excellence in clinical services, education, and research and knowledge translation. The Student Researcher reports to the Rheum4U Project Manager and is expected to end by September 2025 with possibility of extension depending on available funding. The position may also have accountabilities to Principal Investigators as assigned by the Project Manager. Rheum4U is an integrated data capture system to track and enable measurement of patient and system outcomes over time.

This position is paid on an hourly basis. During summer months the student researcher can work up to 35 hours per week and during the academic school year the maximum hours per week is 22.5 hours with a minimum 3-hour shift. Work will be conducted in a hybrid environment between the Richmond Road Diagnostic Centre Rheumatology Clinic, the University of Calgary Foothills Medical Centre Campus, and working from home. The position will be for one year with possibility of extension depending on available grant funding.

Position is only available to students registered in courses at the University of Calgary.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist with maintaining ethics applications
  • Create study documents such as consent forms, interview scripts, and surveys
  • Recruit study participants and obtain informed consent for the project of the awarded grant and for the Rheum4U precision health registry
  • Collect health care information from the electronic medical record system and assist with data entry of consented participants for the Rheum4U precision health registry
  • Assist and/or conduct focus groups/interviews
  • Transcribe recorded focus groups/interviews and analyze qualitative data
  • Conduct descriptive statistics on quantitative data
  • Contribute to possible publication of research
  • Maintain research records and documentation that complies with GCP, TCPS2 and the Health Information Act
  • Maintain communication with Reports To Manager regarding absences, vacation, appointments, questions and concerns
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Senior undergraduate student or graduate student in health sciences or related field, preferred
  • Must be a student registered at the University of Calgary
  • Experience with conducting and analyzing qualitative research, preferred
  • Knowledgeable in patient-centered care, Connect Care electronic medical record system, and descriptive statistics an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, NVivo, and referencing software such as EndNote and Mendeley
  • Strong technical writing and organizational skills
  • GCP and TCPS2 certified or able to complete upon starting position
  • Able to complete privacy training upon starting position
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to share information in an effective and collaborative manner
  • Have the ability and desire to continuously learn
  • Can demonstrate initiative to generate improvements and foster positive outcomes
  • Able to demonstrate respect, dignity and integrity in interpersonal relationships and to demonstrate positive personal coping and wellness strategies
  • Can work independently and have the ability to function effectively in team situations both within and across departments and other organizations to achieve optimal collective result
