Summary



This position will focus on the development and optimization of liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (LC-UV) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analyses. The research focus in Dr. Huan s lab is to develop analytical chemistry and bioinformatics for state-of-the-art metabolomics and its applications in biological research.



Organizational Status



The incumbent reports directly to the Principal Investigator.



Work Performed



Assists with development of LC-UV platform for an amino acid analyzer. Performs sample preparation and metabolite extraction for metabolomics experiments. Operates LC-MS platform available in Huan lab to perform metabolomics and lipidomics. Assists with the maintenance and troubleshooting of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry system to ensure proper functioning during analysis. Provides proofreading of manuscripts and grant applications in a timely manner.


Consequence of Error/Judgement



Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication between team members and the Principal Investigator may result in delays and affect the quality of research output, which may impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding for the research group and UBC. Failure to follow all applicable safety precautions, including carrying out a thorough risk assessment before undertaking an experiment, may result in serious injury to the incumbent and others in the surrounding area.



Supervision Received



The incumbent will receive instruction during initial orientation and training, with continued guidance both informally and during regularly scheduled check-in meetings with the Principal Investigator. The incumbent works under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or designated senior staff/research team members.

Preferred Qualifications



High School graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum of 2 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience with the following:Analytical chemistry laboratory experience preferred, basic familiarity with instrumentation software packages. Ability to use Microsoft Office suite at an intermediate level. Ability to operate liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Ability to use UBC library information systems and other online resources for the purposes of research. Ability to prioritize work and deliver results in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work in a collaborative environment, exercising sound judgement and tact to analyze problems, identify issues, and propose solutions. * Ability to maintain professional working relationships within a diverse research group.
