The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) is the second-largest division of the University of Toronto, Canada\'s preeminent research institution. The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a two-year appointment. The anticipated start date would be August 1, 2023. This position will be in the , led by Dr. David Samson

The Research Associate (RA) will have previous publications showcasing specializations in Social Network Analysis (SNA) and/or social identity, intergroup relations, and intragroup processes. The successful candidate will contribute to shaping the SHEL\'s culture and is expected to independently carry out research projects where the RA would be responsible for experiment design, seeking ethics approvals, and supervision of lab staff. The RA will be given significant autonomy and will help develop future research areas. As a SHEL senior member, the RA will be expected to take on a leadership role and facilitate the development of members of the lab in their area of expertise. The RA will have the ability to collaborate with the graduate students of the evolutionary anthropology group at the University of Toronto, as well as the graduate students of other affiliated faculty, who spend the bulk of their time at the Department of Anthropology.

The Research Associate Term position will be responsible for:

  • designing, planning and executing research projects;
  • interfacing with industry and governmental partners;
  • working with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams;
  • coordinating with other project leaders, PIs and collaborators;
  • data analysis and reporting;
  • working with and training students and trainees;
  • effective verbal and written communication and assistance in preparation of scientific manuscripts; as part of the funding source institutional requirements, you will be expected to perform an annual youth outreach activity (and will be allotted an annual budget) targeting high school students
(Minimum Qualifications)

EDUCATION:

Ph.D. in a relevant area of Evolutionary Anthropology, Cognitive Psychology, or closely related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE:

At least three (3) to five (5) years of demonstrated experience in anthropology, evolutionary biology, social identity, personality psychology, global health, and sleep. Demonstrated experience with publications showcasing specializations in Social Network Analysis (SNA) and/or social identity, intergroup relations, and intragroup processes. Strong experience in designing, planning, and executing research projects. Demonstrated experience in data analysis and reporting. Strong proficiency in preparation of scientific manuscripts. Experience in training and monitoring performance of students.

  • Working with trainees, training students to perform experiments and general lab tasks
  • Purchasing/dealing with vendors
  • Actigraphy using a variety of devices to collect data
OTHER:

Superior organizational skills. Self-motivated with an ability to multi-task. Ability to work in a collaborative group. Ability to lead a project and co-ordinate research teams. Supervisory skills including effective teambuilding and the ability to establish positive working relationships and foster collaboration to achieve common goals. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong decision-making and management skills.

Note: This is an 84% FTE, two (2) year term position with possibility of extension. The anticipated start date would be in August 2023.
