Description:

The Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a one-year appointment. The anticipated start date is October 2, 2023.

The Research Associate will be intrinsically involved in research projects where they contribute, by way of their academic expertise, to the projects directed by the principal investigator. The Research Associate is expected to independently carry out documentary-ethnographic and interview-based studies of civilian police oversight services in Canada. Additional tasks will including tracking and analyzing criminal proceedings initiated against police officers in Canada and the United States for use-of-force incidents.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Acquiring and analyzing use-of-force oversight decisions
  • Conducting primary research on officer and victim experience in oversight investigations
  • Produce annual research reports on
  • Preparing and delivering articles, book chapters, books, and conference presentations

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
  • A PhD in Sociology, Anthropology, Criminology or cognate disciplines
Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) or more years of experience in studies of police oversight
  • excellent research and analytical skills, as well as strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience conducting interview research with vulnerable populations and authority figures
  • Ability to work in a team, communicate, and give & receive constructive feedback
  • Ability to supervise, delegate to, and mentor research assistants
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and work environment
  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing, publishing research, attending conferences, and presenting research
