Job Summary

To assist with research activities within the UBC Mood Disorders Centre (MDC) at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (CBH)



Organizational Status

The Research Assistant reports to the Principal Investigator and Director of the Mood Disorders Centre (Dr. Raymond Lam). The Research Assistant also interacts with other research assistants on the team and with members of other clinics and departments within the CBH and UBC Hospital (pharmacy and laboratory medicine), as needed.



Work PerformedAssists with writing and preparing protocol material (e.g. screening checklists, consent forms, ethics, protocols, patient information sheets); Recruits and screens potential research participants; Obtains informed consent; Transcribes patient data into study report forms and maintains study patient records in good order; Administers questionnaires and completes study procedures with participants; Performs data entry; Scores instruments (tallying scores, checking scores for accuracy) completed by patients and clinicians; Prepares and ships biological samples (e.g., blood and urine) for studies (does not take blood); Coordinates appointments for research participants and assists with patient flow through the clinic; Completes literature reviews and internet searches; Trains and oversees the work of research assistants at lower classification levels; May distribute work assignments and orient research assistants at lower classification levels to new procedures and equipment; Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in tracking all aspects of the project, data recording and entry, or breaches in confidentiality have the potential to negatively affect the research projects.



Supervision Received

Supervised by Principal Investigator (Dr. Raymond Lam). Weekly meetings held to cover significant issues; daily supervision and guidance provided by Research Assistants at higher classifications.



Supervision Given

Trains and oversees the work of research assistants at lower classification levels; may distribute work assignments and orient research assistants at lower classification levels to new procedures and equipment.



Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred QualificationsExperience working in a research setting, including experience in Clinical Trials is preferred; Experience working with clinical populations, e.g. clinically depressed patients or bipolar patients, in a compassionate and sensitive manner; Experience and familiarity with psychiatric questionnaires and interviews; Demonstrated experience with computers and computer software including MS Word for Windows, MS Excel, Power Point and SPSS; * Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, multi-tasking and organizational skills;
