This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this positions requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

Job Summary
The work will be supporting the day-to-day laboratory functions of the Clinical Microbiology Proficiency Testing program, a program within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UBC Koerner Pavilion site 2211 Wesbrook Mall.

Organizational Status
CMPT is a program within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. CMPT provides simulation samples to medical laboratories and water testing laboratories for Quality Assessment of microbiology testing practices.

Work Performed

  • Assists the CMPT Coordinator in a series of tasks and assists in maintaining CMPT data and records.
  • Assists in gathering regulatory and transporter information for transporting samples, regulatory requirements, packaging requirements, Transport of Dangerous Goods, Human Pathogens and Toxins Act,
  • Monitors and maintains inventory of required materials and reagents, assuring that work schedules can be maintained.
  • Assists in maintaining laboratory quality management documents and records, including strategic quality procedures, opportunities for improvement, strategic quality forms,
  • Assists with packaging of samples and preparation for transport.
  • Assists with posting information as required to the on-line website.
  • Assists in general laboratory maintenance. Assists in gathering information on laboratory equipment and reagent requirements. Completes records of the work performed, as required
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The proficiency testing materials are sent to clinical bacteriology and water testing laboratories nationally. Errors may have deleterious impact on testing materials and on experiments to be performed. Intermittent errors would necessitate review of quality control techniques and continual errors in routine work could lead to discipline or dismissal

This position reports to the principal investigator through the Coordinator and/or the senior technologist.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • B.A. with science background or B.Sc or BMLSc (preferred).
  • Aware and capable of adhering to science laboratory safety requirements
  • Prior working experience in microbiology laboratory setting a definite asset.
  • Minimum of 2 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent time-management, and attention to detail are musts.
  • Flexibility, eagerness to learn, ability to take direction, and to work as part of a team.
Awareness of potential risks in laboratories settings, with particular concerns in microbiology. * Understands the rationale and role of safety/hygiene requirements
