The Director of Research & Academics and the Director of the North Simcoe Muskoka Specialized Geriatric Services (NSM SGS) Program, are currently seeking a Research Scientist. Affiliated with the Waypoint Research Institute, this individual will work directly with the North Simcoe Muskoka Specialized Geriatric Services (NSM SGS) program to advance the program\xe2\x80\x99s research capacity in the area of Specialized Geriatric Services and health system integration/ transformation by: building research capacity within the team; helping design, plan, supervise, direct, and conduct scientific research; supporting the completion of high quality research grant applications, research proposals, peer-reviewed abstracts and publications; and, by building key partnerships regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally as appropriate. Through this work, the individual will advance both Waypoint and the NSM SGS program as a Learning Health System (LHS). The NSM SGS program, a regional program under the leadership of Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, was established in 2016 to advance the care of complex/frail older adults in the NSM region and their care partners. With a mandate for leadership, clinical service, education and mentorship, research and ethics as well as advocacy, the program collaborates with a broad variety of partners from within and outside the NSM health system to improve patient outcomes, build capacity and foster system change. Please Note: This position offers a hybrid work environment as required consisting of remote work with the opportunity for in-office access. Office location is 190 Cundles Rd East in Barrie, ON.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Build the research capacity of the team and key partners through education, mentorship and by co-leading research implementation teams.
  • Conduct high-quality research to advance our understanding of both the care of complex/ frail older adults and their care partners as well as health system integration and transformation.
  • Perform and provide critical analysis and thinking, advice and recommendations to further Scientific and public understanding of specialized geriatric services and health system integration/transformation.
  • Work with statistical and/or qualitative computer software when analyzing data.
  • Provide advanced statistical and/or qualitative insight in the interpretation and discussion of study results with other scientists, subject matter experts, clinicians, and patients.
  • Write applications to Waypoint\xe2\x80\x99s Administration and Research Ethics Board seeking approval for proposed research project(s).
  • Maintain research data according to hospital policy and standards of professional practice.
  • Carry out scholarly work, including writing grants, writing research papers, preparing presentations and publications, presenting research at conferences and seminars, participating in stakeholder meetings, and writing and editing high quality research content.
  • Liaise and facilitate partnerships between local, regional, provincial, national and international partners with expertise in specialized geriatric services and health system integration/transformation.
  • Advance Waypoint\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in research and clinical activities.
  • Perform work in compliance with all hospital policies and procedures and legislation (Occupational Health &Safety Act, Fire Code, WHMIS, etc.) relevant to health and safety, security (including relational/therapeutic security) and potential risk hazards, and in particular, \xe2\x80\x9cduties of the worker\xe2\x80\x9d as defined in Section 28 of the OH&S Act.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Doctorate from a recognized post-secondary institution specializing in mental health, substance use, public health, and/or related disciplines
  • Experience with the practical and theoretical principles of implementation science and practice.
  • Minimum five (5) years\xe2\x80\x99 related research experience:
    • Within the areas of specialized geriatric services and health system integration/transformation;
    • Applying to funding sources and securing research funding;
    • Conducting quantitative and/or qualitative data collection, analysis, interpretation, publishing, and reporting;
    • Project management as part of a team; and,
    • Mentoring clinicians and leaders in research and knowledge mobilization.
  • Proven success in the following:
    • Leadership and organizational skills, including the ability to mentor others;
    • Abstract reasoning and analytical skills, including an ability to manage databases and specialized software as appropriate;
    • Creative skills to develop innovative research ideas and methods;
    • Interpersonal skills, able to engage others and inspire an interest in research;
    • Conflict resolution, political sensitivity and self-awareness skills;
    • Results oriented work ethic to work independently and deliver quality, consistent and timely results; and,
    • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values (Caring, Respect, Accountability, Innovation), and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude
  • Proficiency in French/English language skills an asset
