The Artificial Intelligence and Computational Neurosciences (AICONS) Lab and the Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation at Sunnybrook Research Institute and the University of Toronto are seeking a

research assistant

to work on various projects under the supervision of Drs. Maged Goubran, Julie Ottoy, and Nir Lipsman. Our interdisciplinary teams lead computational and neuroimaging analyses for numerous cutting-edge imaging studies and clinical trials at Sunnybrook and the Harquail Centre, including those focused on Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and psychiatric disorders, such as refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder and major depressive disorder. Projects will involve investigating structural and functional brain connectivity in several neuropsychiatric disease populations and neurosurgical patients. The successful candidate will join a diverse, multidisciplinary team of researchers who specialize in developing and applying computational tools and AI to probe and predict circuit alterations in Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and traumatic brain injury. The candidate will be expected to work both independently and as part of a team alongside investigators, clinicians, staff, and graduate/undergraduate students. There will be opportunities to contribute to multiple publications and conference abstracts, as well as attend conferences.




The ideal candidate will possess a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in computer science, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or a related discipline, along with prior research experience in neuroimaging or AI. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with neuroimaging analyses or machine learning frameworks (e.g., Keras, PyTorch, Sci-Kit Learn, and TensorFlow).




Key Responsibilities:




Assisting with managing and analyzing human neuroimaging data, including structural, functional and diffusion MRI, and PET. Helping to design and implement data analysis workflows, incorporating existing tools. Aiding in the development and testing of neuroimaging processing pipelines. Contributing to research projects and publishing papers. Writing and submitting REB applications and other administrative tasks. Helping with booking and scanning surgical patients.





Qualifications:




Post-secondary degree in computer science, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or a related discipline (M.Sc. preferred). One year of relevant research experience. Computer programming experience, with demonstrated skills in Python. Intermediate knowledge of Linux, including shell scripting.





Assets:




Experience with machine learning/deep learning (e.g., Keras, PyTorch, Sci-Kit Learn, TensorFlow). Python software packaging, virtual environments, Anaconda/Conda, Jupyter/IPython Working knowledge of neuroimaging software and toolkits (e.g., Freesurfer, FSL, ITK, MRtrix). Experience with version control systems, such as Git. Self-starter with proven ability to learn quickly and work independently.
