Position Overview The Department of Radiology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. This position reports to the Principal Investigator. The Research Assistant will play a vital role in the execution of the research projects, working closely with faculty, Postdoctoral Associates and graduate students to develop their studies. This will include designing, developing, and implementing experimental activities in accordance with specified protocols. They will have knowledge and expertise in the technical tasks performed as part of the operations and development activities of the research. They will analyze research data and interpret and report results to the postdocs. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Will facilitate the implementation of the scientific projects
  • Will deal with ultrasound equipment, laboratory mice, and in vitro and in vivo settings
  • Handling and experimenting with mice
  • Performing behavioral testing, collecting data and analyzing results
  • Performing perfusion, brain fixation and slicing
  • Design, development and execution of histological testing and immunohistochemistry
    • Protocols
    • Procedures and methods
    • Materials and consumables
  • Preparing and maintaining laboratory equipment and consumables
  • Attending project meetings
  • Drafting of reports
  • Representing the team in meetings for logistics with other laboratories at the University of Calgary and beyond
  • Drafting of animal experimentation protocols
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • MSc level in the areas of biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, or similar
  • Minimum 2 years of experience required
  • Knowledge and experience in histological testing such as Nissl staining and hematoxylin eosin staining (HE)
  • Knowledge of theory and practical application in immunohistochemical evaluation such as cFOS
  • Experience in perfusion, brain fixation, sectioning, and slicing
  • Knowledge and expertise in mouse experimentation and behavioral testing is preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of standard electronic laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, microtome, etc.
  • Experience in flow cytometry would be a plus
  • Knowledge and experience in performing In-Vivo Calcium Imaging in mice including implanting a cranial imaging window, injecting a fluorescent calcium indicator dye and recording the activity of neurons
  • Completion of the IAUTP training on mice recently from UC is preferred
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, time management skills, critical thinking, attention to detail, and technical skills
