This research position will primarily involve exploration of caselaw relating to sentencing decisions. The research assistant will be tasked with identifying and summarizing cases in which non-state community organizations or individuals voluntarily offered to take on roles (e.g. support, oversight) in the aftermath of a crime, and summarizing any impact this had on the sentencing decision. Similar doctrinal research will explore the extent to which sentencing can create obligations for those beyond the person being sentenced. Ability to navigate sentencing decisions will be key, so relevant experience (coursework, other) is an asset, though not required.

The role pays 92 hours at $22.00/hour + benefits. Further RA involvement may be possible. Approximately 5 hours per week, with flexibility to focus more intensely during certain periods, as agreed.

Ce poste de recherche consistera principalement a explorer la jurisprudence relative aux decisions en matiere de determination de la peine. L'assistant de recherche sera charge d'identifier et de resumer les affaires dans lesquelles des organisations communautaires non etatiques ou des particuliers ont volontairement propose d'assumer des roles (par exemple, soutien, surveillance) a la suite d'un crime, et de resumer l'impact que cela a eu sur la decision en matiere de determination de la peine. Une recherche doctrinale similaire explorera dans quelle mesure la determination de la peine peut creer des obligations pour des personnes autres que celle qui est condamnee. La capacite a naviguer dans les decisions de determination de la peine sera essentielle, de sorte qu'une experience pertinente (cours, autres) est un atout, mais n'est pas obligatoire.
