Project Description:
We are conducting a collaborative, mixed-methods research project aimed at understanding screen time utilization trends and their impact on the social-emotional well-being of rural youth (ages 16-24) in Simcoe County, Ontario. In partnership with community organizations and academic institutions, the project will engage youth, families, and stakeholders to co-develop a culturally responsive and youth-centered Screen Time Management Tool (STMT). Drawing on Motivational Interviewing principles and participatory action research, the project involves survey data collection, interviews, and focus groups to generate actionable insights and resources tailored to rural youth. The research assistant will support various stages of the project, including recruitment, data collection, analysis, and knowledge mobilization.
Job Summary:
Provides specialized research support to faculty members in their teaching/ laboratory activities. Work is performed independently.
Accountabilities:
Designs, adapts and performs specialized research procedures.
Carries out complex statistical analysis.
Assists with recruiting participants for studies.
Coordinates and conducts structured project participant interviews and focus groups.
Conducts literature reviews and synthesis.
Coordinates the use of laboratory equipment.
Records, classifies, and summarizes research data according to established procedures.
Performs other related tasks as outlined by the research coordinator
Qualifications:
Education:
Completed a relevant post-secondary degree.
Experience:
Minimum of 12 months' experience.
Assets:
Experience working with youth or conducting research with youth populations, especially in rural or underserved communities
Knowledge of mental health, digital media use, or adolescent development
Training or coursework in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
Experience with survey platforms (e.g., REDCap, Qualtrics) and data collection protocols
Experience conducting or transcribing semi-structured interviews or focus groups
Proficiency with data analysis software (e.g., NVivo for qualitative, STATA or SPSS for quantitative)
Strong organizational and time management skills, including tracking ethics compliance and scheduling
Experience with community-based or participatory research (e.g., youth advisory groups, co-design approaches)
Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in intersectoral teams
Ability to create knowledge translation materials (e.g., infographics, workshop slides, social media content)
Additional Information:
Completion of or enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, public health, social work, education, health sciences, or a related discipline)
Demonstrated experience in research support, including participant recruitment, data collection, and/or data management
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with youth, families, and community partners
