Position Overview

The Research Centre in the Faculty of Social Work invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 4 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Faculty of Social Work invites applications for a Research Assistant. Recurring part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform on an irregular basis. Working conditions involve varied hours each week, up to 35hrs/week, depending on stage of project development with flexibility required for occasional evenings and weekends. The position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for assisting in research activities (e.g., focus groups, interviews, NGT panels, data analysis). These activities will be completed on a tight deadline and will require strong organizational and excellent interpersonal skills. Success in the role will require some judgment and decision-making, following procedures and guidelines set by the PI, and collaboration with the research team.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Conduct literature reviews.
  • Assist in writing manuscripts.
  • Assist with ethics submissions, revisions, and annual approvals.
  • Work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Assist research ethics application by preparing drafts or supporting documents.
  • Provide administrative support to team meetings such as minutes taking and setting up, scheduling, and booking meetings.
  • Maintaining research files with attention to version control.
  • Assist with the screening and recruitment of participants.
  • Scheduling of qualitative interviews, focus groups, NGT panels.
  • Complete informed consent with participants and maintain detailed records.
  • Coordinate transcription and prepare transcripts for data analysis (cleaning, anonymizing, and uploading data).
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Minimum Bachelor\'s Degree in health sciences, social sciences or a related discipline required (e.g., mental health, psychology, medicine) with knowledge in mental health and suicide ideation.
  • Minimum two years of related experience as a research assistant required.
  • Demonstrates skills conducting qualitative research, particularly participant recruitment and data collection through interviews, focus groups, and NGT panels.
  • Experience in mental health is an asset.
  • Recruitment of students, parents/caregivers, and caregivers an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability for professional report writing, (e.g., manuscripts and scientific reports).
  • Knowledge of research ethics and submission of REB applications.
  • Strong organizational skills, good judgment, and concern for detail and accuracy required.
  • Able to work independently and with others as a part of a virtual and in-person team.
  • Able to communicate well with participants and colleagues from various disciplines is essential.
  • Computer literacy and ease with learning new software programs, such as NVivo or other qualitative software.
