Department of Clinical Neurosciences

in the

Cumming School of Medicine

invites applications for a

Research Assistant

. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.


Reporting to the Principle Investigator, the Research Assistant will work collaboratively with the managers, administrative staff, and research participants to complete research projects in health professions education. The position will involve coordinating qualitative interviews, conducting qualitative interviews, analyzing transcripts and some writing. There may be a role for drafting ethics approvals, grant submissions, and contributing to manuscripts as well as coordinating project meetings.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):

Organize/coordinate semi-structured interviews with research participants in a qualitative project Conduct semi-structured interviews, review transcripts for accuracy, arrange for member checking Use qualitative software such as QSR NVivo to analyze qualitative data using common qualitative approaches Ensuring project deadlines are met Draft proposals, ethics applications Complete literature reviews Coordinate research team meetings, minutes and action plans

Qualifications / Requirements:



Post-secondary education (MSc/MEd/MA or PhD in health professions/medical education) with relevant training in education research methodology and design Demonstrated track record of work in medical education research with proficiency and skills in qualitative methods sufficient to work independently Expertise in program evaluation Experience with realist evaluation would be an asset Ability to work independently, multi-task, and anticipate next steps in a project underway Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and qualitative research software (QSR NViVO) Able to manage deadlines and communicate clearly with the team about requirements Excellent written and verbal communication skills Experience with the University of Calgary Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board and IRISS system for ethics submissions would be an asset High level of problem solving, organizational skill and interpersonal skills Positive attitude and ability to work independently and as part of a team
