Job Summary
The Research Assistant will support senior researchers who are publishing in the area of kinesiology, physiotherapy and exercise. The position requires enthusiasm for writing tasks and reasonable ability in writing. Final editing will be completed by senior colleagues. Communication with other team members will mainly be by email. The successful candidate needs to have good organizational and project management skills to handle 20-40 different manuscripts (10-36 pages each) during the year and to be able to prioritise tasks. Experience with publishing for research or the publication process itself will be useful; however, content knowledge is not essential.

A background that includes health training such as kinesiology, physical therapy etc. would be an advantage. This position would suit a clinician who does not have a Canadian licence, or a graduate who is aiming to enter a health profession training degree. The job has the flexibility to allow the candidate to take exams etc. as needed to be able to apply for health professional degrees or accreditation.

Organizational Status
Professor Khan\xe2\x80\x99s research program is based at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility (CHHM). CHHM is a University of British Columbia Senate-approved organization affiliated with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. The research centre improves the lives of Canadians by decreasing the burden of arthritis and fall-related fractures. The Centre\'s research focuses on prevention, detection, and improved treatment of bone and joint diseases so that Canadians can enjoy the freedom that comes with mobility.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Karim Khan and be located at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility. Work can be done online when physical distancing guidelines apply. The candidate will also interact closely with provincial, pan-Canadian and international partners.

Work Performed
The successful candidate will:

  • Prepare written materials ahead of submission to publications;
  • Be introduced to partners who have established relationships with Dr Khan and his team; the candidate will then work with that partner directly to assist with producing the final product;
  • Gather relevant literature for research partners to consider;
  • Organize research team meetings for and with senior members of the team, and prepare the agenda and materials needed for the meeting;
  • Coordinate various elements of publication including artwork, digital media files (podcast, video);
  • Follow up on copyright permissions (training will be provided);
  • Use a reference management program (such as EndNote software) to assist researchers in managing bibliographies and references.

Errors in judgement or decision making may compromise the reputation of the research team, the Centre, and the University

Supervision Received
This position works with independence on the tasks required under the general direction of Professor Karim Khan and his senior colleagues. Work is reviewed daily/twice weekly and feedback is provided.

Supervision Given
Supports Dr Khan\xe2\x80\x99s research team as needed and connects with external research providers (mainly about written material/text). Not anticipated to manage staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Part-time work/volunteer experience in writing/publishing (student magazines etc.) an asset;
Ability to edit well-written manuscripts and complete supportive tasks as needed (such as merging references into documents, checking versions);
Ability to self motivate, set and meet timelines;
Ability to communicate effectively with team leaders and other contributing authors, mainly in writing;
Expertise in musculoskeletal research and arthritis is an asset.
