Job Description

The Geriatric Mental Health Services (GMHS) within the Complex Care and Recovery Program is currently seeking a casual Research Assistant 1. The Geriatric Mental Health Services (GMHS) is dedicated to the provision of specialized, interprofessional assessment, treatment, consultation, and follow-up services to older persons with mental health and addiction problems. Within this program, there is a strong and focused research component having as its primary aim to enhance understanding of Alzheimer's disease and dementia and genetic risks.

In this position, you will assist the Research Managers and program staff with a number of research responsibilities for, primarily, the ACAD study- an exciting new North America-wide NIH-funded project examining genetic risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease in East Asian populations (specifically, older individuals of Chinese descent) in the Greater Toronto Area.

Your role will include a number of research responsibilities, including the assisting with recruitment of study participants from outpatient clinics in the Greater Toronto Area, screening and consenting potential research participants. All of the above will be done in either English or Mandarin. As such, the successful candidate must be fluent in English and Mandarin.

Additionally, you will be responsible for scheduling human participant interviews; handling biosamples for genetic analysis; data entry into the REDCap study database; assisting with REB protocols and assisting with preparing data for presentations and peer-reviewed research papers. You will maintaining subject records and study logs. Other research related administrative duties may also be required.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess:

  • Ability to fluently speak in English and Mandarin and read/write in Simplified/Traditional Chinese is required.
  • Secondary School and/or Specialty Courses
  • Experience working or volunteering in a health services or academic setting, an asset
  • Knowledge of PC software skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Excel), internet search engines, and database software packages
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (oral/written), and organizational skills are required; along with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to exercise initiative and good judgment is required for this position
  • Ability to multi-task and produce high-quality, accurate work in a fast-paced environment, while meeting program deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a variety of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Salary Range: $21.17 - $26.10 per hour
