The opportunity:



The Special Loans Relationship Manager (SLRM) is responsible for the proactive management of delinquent, distressed, and high-risk credit accounts within the organization's loan portfolio.

This role ensures timely recovery of outstanding balances while balancing client relationships, social impact goals, and compliance with credit policy, funder requirements, and applicable accounting standards (IFRS 9 / ASNPO).

The incumbent leads or supports restructuring, workout, and recovery strategies to preserve capital and maintain portfolio quality.

Delinquency & Special Loans ManagementMonitor delinquent, impaired, and watchlist accounts on a daily and monthly basis. Conduct in-depth borrower reviews to assess financial viability, collateral position, and potential recovery options. Manage all accounts classified as Special Loans or Stage 2/3 IFRS 9 exposures. Develop and propose/implement individualized collection and restructuring strategies (extensions, forbearance, refinancing, settlement). Coordinate loan restructuring, including revised terms, amortizations, and covenant adjustments. Ensure all actions are compliant with organizational policy, legal frameworks, and funder covenants.

Collections & Recovery ExecutionInitiate and manage communications with delinquent borrowers through calls, written correspondence, and in-person meetings. Negotiate repayment arrangements, settlements, and partial write-offs where appropriate, as approved by the department head. Collaborate with external partners (law firms, bailiffs, collection agencies, insolvency trustees, etc.) for legal recovery. Oversee the preparation of demand letters, notices of default, and enforcement instructions. Coordinate legal actions, security realization, and asset liquidation where necessary. Track recoveries of principal, interest, and legal fees, ensuring correct allocation to the appropriate loan fund.

Portfolio Monitoring & ReportingMaintain accurate and up-to-date records of all delinquent and recovered accounts. Support calculation and validation of Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL) and Provision for Credit Losses (PCL) in coordination with the C-Suite and Finance. Prepare monthly Collections & Recovery Reports for the C-Suite. Maintain a Special Loans Register including watchlist, risk ratings, and recovery progress. Track and analyze delinquency KPIs: Days Past Due (DPD), roll rates, loss in event of default (LIED), and recovery rates.

Client Relationship & Community EngagementBalance recovery actions with sensitivity to client circumstances and community impact. Provide guidance to clients exploring restructuring or early repayment solutions. Refer viable clients back to Business Lending for new funding when applicable. Represent the organization professionally in all borrower and partner interactions. Governance & Compliance Ensure all recovery actions comply with: + Credit Policy & Procedures
+ IFRS 9 and ASNPO requirements for impairment
+ Funder agreements
+ Canadian legal and regulatory frameworks (Bank Act, PPSA, privacy laws)
Participate in internal and external audits. Maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive borrower data.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Law, or Economics A designation or coursework in Credit Management (ICM, CAMP) or Risk Management (CRMP, CFA, FRM) is an asset. 5+ years in commercial or community lending, including at least 2 years in collections, special loans, or restructuring. Experience with IFRS 9, loan workouts, and credit loss recognition preferred. Familiarity with Canadian banking systems, PPSA security realization, and insolvency processes. Prior exposure to grant-funded or impact loan funds an asset. Proficiency with Loan Management Systems (LMS), CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce), and accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, Dynamics 365). Strong knowledge of Excel, Word, and data analytics for portfolio monitoring. Working understanding of legal documents, security registrations, and collections legislation. Excellent negotiation, diplomacy, and communication skills. Analytical and detail-oriented, with sound judgment.
