We are an organization where individuals' contributions are valued and there are many opportunities for personal growth and development.Position SummaryThe Registered Practical Nurse is in the Emergency Department is responsible for providing nursing care under the direction of medical practitioners, registered nurses or other health team members.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sound Knowledge of Nursing Process and responsibilities while meeting the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Practical Nurses and functions within the policies and procedures of the Patient Care Services.
  • Organizing and implementing a plan of nursing care to meet the needs of each assigned patient.
  • Performing nursing interventions such as taking vital signs, applying aseptic techniques including sterile dressing, ensuring infection control, monitoring nutritional intake, conducting specimen collection and conducts patient assessments.
  • Administering medication and observing and documenting therapeutic effects.
  • Providing pre-operative and post-operative personal and comfort care.
  • Initiating and Monitoring established respiratory therapy, intravenous therapy and performs venipuncture.
  • Effectively utilizing human and material resources.
  • Participating in the orientation of new staff members to the nursing unit.
  • Attending educational programs and in-services to enhance his/her knowledge, and participating in the planning and implementing of same.
  • Assessing his/her own professional development needs, and establishing goals to meet same.
  • Assisting in maintaining the established standards of care through individual performance, participation in hospital committees.
  • Cooperating with clinical instructors to provide an educational environment for nursing students. Interpreting and demonstrating skilled nursing care to students. Participating in preceptor ship program.
  • Maintaining an awareness of current developments in nursing practice.
  • Taking responsibility for the safety and welfare of patients.
  • Manage a varied patient assignment in minor or CDU within scope of practice and assist in Critical Situations when required (ie runner/documentation)
  • Functioning in accordance with established hospital emergency procedures.
  • Promoting inter and intradepartmental cooperation by effective communication.
  • Participating as a member of the multidisciplinary team and promoting effective liaisons between patient, family and physician, and other health team members and community agencies. Encouraging referrals to appropriate community resources.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of and maintaining competence in accordance with Regulated Health Professionals Act (RHPA).
  • Participating in assessing health needs and promoting health education and maintenance through patient and family teaching programs.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by direct manager.
QualificationsEducation:
  • Current registrations with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as Registered Practical Nurse
  • Qualified to practice within current CNO RPN Scope of Practice Guidelines
  • Current BCLS Certification required
  • Casted Course preferred or one (1) to two (2) years of experience casting and splinting in an Emergency Room or Outpatient setting.
  • Current Coronary Care 1 certificate preferred
Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years' experience working in an Emergency Room or Acute Care setting required.
