ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PATIENT SAFETY

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Reporting directly to the Clinical Manager, the Registered Occupational Therapist at WDMH will provide assessments, interventions, education, prevention and consultation to patients with physical, cognitive and environmental challenges related to their occupations/Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) with a focus on client-centered care. Occupational Therapy services are provided to the following units: Medical/Surgical, Complex Continuing Care, Emergency and other areas as identified by referral. The Occupational Therapist will work in collaboration with the discharge planning team to support patients in their transitions in care. The Occupational Therapist will adapt to the needs of the patient populations within the organization to meet their needs with evidence based best practice.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK
CLINICAL
Assess patient conditions, analyze data, develop treatment goals and establish a patient-centered treatment plan based on best practice
Explain assessment/treatment procedures to patient and relevant other and obtain appropriate consent
Evaluate patients' cognitive, perceptual, sensory and motor functions, activities of daily living and home environment
Actively participate in patient discharge planning with physicians and other allied health team and make referrals to other services when necessary
Document assessments, interventions and patient's interactions in the patient's chart according to the standards of the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
Maintain up-to-date statistics according to the workload measurement system
ADVISORY
Advise Clinical Services Managers regarding operational issues specific to OT
Liaise with staff, physicians, managers and learning specialists to ensure high quality patient care
Identify and implement quality initiatives and projects specific to OT
Identify and support the resolution of outstanding administrative issues specific to OT
Advise and participate in WDMH committees as requested (i.e. Medicine and CCC quality meetings)
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Identify and communicate any legislative issues related to OT
Review & monitor mechanisms that are in place to address credentialing requirements specific to OT
Develop or update team job descriptions as needed in conjunction with Clinical Services Managers
Identify professional practice issues which need to be addressed during organizational change (i.e. Accreditation Standard)
Support staff and encourage participation in the change process
Establish or support structures which facilitate intra professional networking
Liaise with professional associations and colleges
Demonstrate and model the profession to the community and the hospital; provide leadership in terms of knowledge, patient care, and research
EDUCATION
Engage in continuing education
Support and mentor learners
Assess educational needs of staff and help develop bedside education in conjunction with the clinical managers
Engage in the placement, orientation, supervision and evaluation of students in collaboration with Clinical Services Managers and Directors
Liaise with the appropriate educational institutions as required
RESEARCH AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
Ensure that a process for researched evidence-based practice is implemented and evaluated
Ensure that quality improvement activities related to clinical practice are ongoing
Support research and quality initiatives
ADMINISTRATION
Contribute to workload and productivity targets in collaboration with Clinical Service Managers
Advise on budget planning and control in regard to supplies, equipment, and space
Advise on external contracts such as purchase of service
Collaborate with Clinical Services managers to determine coverage needs and ensure adequate coverage is available within the resources of the discipline
Provide designated reports
QUALIFICATIONS
Degree in Occupational Therapy
Member in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in a multidisciplinary team
Can demonstrate examples of leadership, effective communication and professionalism
Possesses excellent customer service skills
Experience in quality improvement is an asset.
Good attendance record and availability to fulfill a shift commitment
Ability to relate well with members of the health care team
Ensure patients are treated within a safe environment
Promotes the commitment statement of the organization
Strict confidentiality of all patients and hospital related information
Responsible for his/her own professional development
Provide a satisfactory Police Check (vulnerable sector)
