Job Description


The Student Success Centre (SSC) at Dalhousie Agricultural Campus, Truro, NS, is a multi-disciplinary team comprising Academic Accommodations, Academic Advising, International Advising, Health and Wellness, and a Writing Centre. Reporting to the Primary Care Manager, the Registered Nurse will provide clinical services and act as the entry point into the health system locally for all university students on the Dalhousie University Agricultural Campus as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide telephone and in-person triage, care, follow-up and consultation. Perform and document comprehensive and focused health and medication assessments. Monitor and maintain medical supplies, equipment and infection control practices.
  • Inform and educate patients regarding test results and interventions. Recommend over-the-counter medication and provide prescribed medications (e.g. contraceptive, antibiotics) using Care Directives. Counsel patients on drug therapies, side-effects and interactions.
  • Initiate and/or participate in health plan development and patient care case conferences to ensure coordinated, comprehensive and holistic services. Monitor patient progress, adjusting health plans as required.
  • Encourage maximum patient independence and accountability for self-care. Assist and support patients with implementation of the health plan including interventions and diagnostic testing. This may involve setting up referral appointments.
  • Assess health education requirements and readiness of the patient. Provide health education and counseling on topics such as illness and injury prevention strategies, care and treatment, individual and family adjustments, and support systems as appropriate.
  • Communicate with secondary and tertiary providers to ensure continuity of care. Establish and maintain effective relationships and partnerships with care providers and relevant community groups to benefit system integration and efficient service utilization.

Clinic hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Shifts will be 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse currently licensed in good standing with the Nova Scotia College of Nurses(NSCN) plus more than five years\' experience in an interprofessional collaborative healthcare setting (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • Excellent clinical and technical skills combined with a varied clinical background including nursing practice in mental health, sexual health, medical surgery, ambulatory and emergency care, and community health.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to the full scope of practice in a busy, fast-paced environment and apply the standards of care required for a variety of health issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Strong organizational, time management and prioritization skills.
  • Knowledge and awareness related to cultural competency and serving a diversity of patient populations.
  • Proficiency in use of electronic medical records for documentation and communication.
  • Demonstrated adherence to NSCN standards and commitment to maintenance of continuing education.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office suite including Outlook, Word & Excel.

  • Mental health nursing and suicide risk assessment & intervention training.
  • Relevant experience and knowledge related to primary health care with knowledge of health assessment and interventions within the family practice context.
