Purpose

The Registered Nurse (RN), Emergency Department, is a member of a multi-disciplinary team. This position is responsible for assessing patient health status and responding to actual and potential health problems including emergent and critical situations on an ongoing basis.

Scope

  • The RN, Acute Care is responsible for quality nursing care, under supervision, within their scope of practice as outlined by the professional licensing body, Registered Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (RNANT/NU).
  • Using evidenced based practice, the RN, Acute Care provides competent, independent nursing care while maintaining professional accountability. The RN, Acute Care coordinates by collaborating with other health care team members to ensure patients regain optimal functioning of well-being and quality of life as members of society within an appropriate time frame.
  • This position directly impacts the delivery of acute care health needs to patients by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating all services provided to patients within the ambulatory care setting.
  • The RN, Acute Care must be cognizant of fiscal constraints and have the ability to work within these constraints.
Responsibilities

The incumbent is expected to have a working knowledge of the following areas; Emergency, Maternal and New-born; Paediatric; Psychiatry; Medicine, Surgery, Gerontology; Palliative; Infections Disease Control and Employee Health and Wellness.

The position is a member of the Nursing Team who provides urgent to non-urgent nursing care to patients from Paediatric to Adults, who are experiencing medical/mental disorder with predictable and unpredictable outcomes.
  • Acting as a patient and family advocate, the role is responsible for providing safe, competent, and quality nursing care while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • When providing total patient care, the role is responsible to act within the guidelines outlined by RNANT/NU scope of practice, Code of Ethics by the Canadian Nurses Association, NEU collective agreement and Government of Nunavut policies.
  • Required to participate in educational opportunities offered by the Department of Health, the RNANT/NU, and other accredited schools or to receive current information on new trends in nursing and medicine including, but not limited to: diagnostic testing, pharmaceutical advances, equipment updates and evidenced based best practice guidelines for professional development to ensure quality patient care.
  • Responsible for the provision of direct nursing care in a cross-cultural setting by applying the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating) for all patients in the system. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Collecting data, assisted by the use of CTAS, regarding the clients\xe2\x80\x99 physical and psychological status at the time of presentation to the ER Department, and during their stay. This is done by performing primary, secondary, and focused assessment to determine acuity, urgency, and priorities, assisted by the use of CTAs;
  • Making decisions about priorities based on ABCD\xe2\x80\x99s (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability of Emergency Care.
  • Using Critical thinking skills, which includes the ability to judge the relevance of data, formulate valid consultations and make judgements concerning the needs of clients and inform the physician.
  • Treating medical emergencies in the absence of a physician (i.e., cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and anaphylactic shock) for infants, children, and adults;
  • Knowing the steps involved in the event of an emergency labour and delivery, and the initial steps in caring for the new-born, mother, and the ability to perform APGAR scoring.
  • Performing 12 lead EKG\xe2\x80\x99s, recognize aberrant rhythms and provide emergency cardiac care. Cardiac Monitoring and Interpretation.
  • Recognizing the need to splint/immobilize broken bones and or use traction.
  • Identifying and dealing with psychiatric crisis, a general understanding of the Nunavut Mental Health Act(MHA), the common forms utilized and standing orders of QGH to deal with clients arriving to the ER under the MHA.
  • Detecting abuse across the age spectrum, documentation, and reporting.
  • Triaging by telephone of crisis situations and implementing appropriate interventions (for example-suicidal and homicidal threats)
  • Providing patients with information regarding their medical condition, obtaining informed consent and appropriate teaching to facilitate return to optimal health and well-being.
  • Evaluating treatment, diagnostics and medical regimes and adjusting accordingly
  • Performing Independent health assessments and acting accordingly
  • Performing various nursing skills efficiently and effectively
  • Working as a team member in a multi-disciplinary practice including orientation of new staff(nursing and medical students, nurses and physicians and allied health care professionals)
  • Adapting to fluctuations in the clinical setting(i.e., high physician, nursing, and allied health care professional turnover)
  • Providing allied health care professional duties in their absence(i.e., physiotherapy and respiratory therapy)
  • Accountable for all nursing care provided to patients and families.
  • Delegating proficiently to support staff(LPNs, interpreters, security, housekeeping)
  • Updating and adhering to policies and procedures using evidence based, best practice guidelines.
  • Maintaining professional conduct at all times
  • Resolving Conflicts involving patients, families, and staff
  • Maintaining universal precautions to ensure safety for patients, families, and staff.
  • Collaborates with other health care team members to ensure patients receive optimal care.
  • Communicating and consulting with other health care professionals in the hospital
  • Utilizes external services available, including public health, homecare, social services, mental health services, homeless shelters, women\xe2\x80\x99s shelter, RCMP, crisis and suicide prevention, critical incident stress debriefing, adult and children\xe2\x80\x99s group homes, elder\xe2\x80\x99s facility, youth services, medivac services, OSHNI, medical boarding home, environmental health representatives, fire EMC teams and Medevac agencies.
  • Participates in total quality management programs (quality assurance, CQI and risk management management) including various hospital committees and working groups.
  • Participates in orientation and development of self and other staff members to ensure consistency of patient/family care.
  • Providing orientation to new health care professionals within the hospital
  • Working closely with nursing students and graduate nurse
  • Providing training opportunities for co-workers including all staff involved in direct patient care.
  • Maintains knowledge of Inuit customs, history, cultural sensitivities, and local community characteristics and adapts clinical practice accordingly.
  • Supervises of support staff and supervision of units in the absence of unit managers.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Comprehensive Knowledge:
  • Applicable legislation, policies, and procedures;
  • Knowledge of, and proficiency in, SOAP charting protocols;
  • Best practices in the field of emergency nursing.
  • Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to adapt clinical practices to the cultural needs of the community and ensure culturally safe and respectful interactions with all patients and their families;
  • Ability to function in a cross-cultural setting understanding that language translation, either written or verbal, may not be available at all times;
  • Physically and mentally competent as demonstrated by medical exam as outlined in the collective agreement;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and assessment skills;
  • Basic computer skills;.
  • The above knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through;
  • Bachelor of nursing or diploma in nursing;
  • 1 year of experience in Emergency Nursing;
  • RNANT/NU registration;
  • Current BCLS and annual recertification is a requirement;
  • Obtain and maintain Nunavut Immunization certification (must be completed within 1 month of hire);
  • The incumbent must attend and successfully complete the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCVI) within 6 months of hire. These mandatory certifications are to be renewed as per guidelines for renewal.
  • The ability to communicate in more than 1 of Nunavut\xe2\x80\x99s official languages would be an asset.
This is a highly sensitive position, Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks are required.
