Your Opportunity:

Genetic Services, AHS South, provides genetic health care services to the Southern Alberta population. Genetic Services are organized in a hub-and-spoke structure, with core facility located at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. This 1.0 FTE temporary registered nurse (RN) position will be assigned to the Metabolic Genetic Clinic located at the ACH. This position reports to the Unit Manager of Genetic Services, AHS South. The Metabolic Genetic Clinic is an Acute and Chronic Ambulatory Care Service responsible for urgent assessment and ongoing management of pediatric and adult patients presenting with rare genetic diseases (predominantly mitochondrial disorders and inborn errors of metabolism). The RN is an essential member of a collaborative multidisciplinary team responsible for medical, dietetic and nursing care across the lifespan. This is a highly specialized and demanding position and requires an RN working at full scope as soon as possible. This typically requires extensive on the job training and expertise to bolster professional knowledge, interpersonal skills, and clinical judgment. Given the temporary nature of this position, the successful candidate will have several years of recent acute ambulatory or inpatient experience as well as chronic care case management in pediatrics and adult care settings. Previous experience with this specific patient population would be an asset.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications: Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications: Minimum 3-5 years recent experience in an inpatient or acute ambulatory setting with pediatric and adult health populations requiring complex multidisciplinary assessment, consultation, diagnosis, medical management, and longitudinal follow-up. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and experience working with a multidisciplinary team including establishing and maintaining collaborative professional relationships, understanding own role and the roles of other professionals, and actively seeking, respecting, considering and being receptive to the diverse perspectives and opinions of team members. Demonstrated emotional self-awareness and self-management, including the ability to build understanding and shared meaning between people, and strong problem solving and conflict management skills. Self-directed, hard-working, showing initiative, decision-making, and problem-solving capacity. Must be able to sit and type on the computer and use a mouse for prolonged periods of time. Strong computer skills are required including experience with SCM, Netcare, and Microsoft OS. Baccalaureate in Nursing. Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience providing nursing care for patients with Inherited Metabolic Disorders is preferred.
