Reporting to the Cardiac Intervention Unit & Cardiac Care Unit Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who is responsible for the provision of optimal care for Cardiology patients undergoing various procedures within a cardiac intervention unit pre and post procedure area. Education

  • Current registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Nurses
  • Critical Care Certificate preferred or completion within two years of hire
  • Coronary Care I & II required
  • Current BCLS required
  • Current ACLS required
  • Must pass a screening arrhythmia quiz obtaining an 80% to move onto interview phase

Experience
  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year of critical care experience or equivalent experience in ED/CCU or ICU is preferred
  • Previous Cath lab pre and post experience preferred
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump experience preferred
  • Strong background in cardiovascular physiology, electrocardiography and rhythm interpretation an asset
  • Experience with aortic hemodynamic monitoring is preferred
  • Groin management experience preferred
  • Experience with pacemaker device analyzing/programming an asset

Unit responsibilities:
  • Physical assessments
  • Prepares and administers medication and provides treatments as prescribed or as required according to professional standards and medication policies, then evaluates and documents outcomes
  • Provision of direct patient care
  • Transcription of orders
  • Checks and verifies physician orders
  • Receives physician telephone orders
  • Intravenous initiation and maintenance
  • Accepts in-charge responsibilities as required
  • Provides and receives report to oncoming staff
  • Documents the care and assessments of patients in the clinical record as per RVH policies and procedures and College of Nurses standards
  • Completes workload measurement

Patient flow Management:
  • Ensures timely acceptance of patients (PULL methodology) to Unit/department and other referring centres
  • Works with service departments to reduce barriers to patient flow
  • Participates with interprofessional team
  • Rounds/Communication Boards/ Daily Communication occurs as per department/unit requirements
  • Identifies situation in department/unit which present barriers to daily patient flow
  • Participates as a member of the inter-professional team to implement plans for patients to meet the Expected Date of Discharge (EDD)

Health and Safety Responsibilities: Adheres to Occupational Health & Safety responsibilities under Section 28 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act including:
  • Works in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulation;
  • Uses or wears the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the worker’s employer requires to be used or worn;
  • Reports to his/her supervisor the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger himself, herself or another worker; and
  • Reports to his/her supervisor any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act or the regulations or the existence of any hazard of which he/she knows

Participates in a culture of safety which encourages prevention, reduces errors and safeguards patients from harm. Completes the Ontario Ministry of Labour “Worker Health & Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training, and provides proof of completion.
