Job Description


This posting is for 1 Permanent full-time position working out of Smeltzer House. The Public Art Curator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the County\xe2\x80\x99s Public Art Program \xe2\x80\x93 procurement, conservation and maintenance, citizen engagement, public art education and promotion, collection management, temporary projects and Annual Art Acquisition Program. Work with other County departments to integrate public art throughout the community during planning stages. Work with other members of the Cultural Services Team on branch initiatives and goals. Responsibilities:

  • Implement the Strathcona County Public Art Plan (including the percent for art program)
  • Proactively seek opportunities within the County at the planning stages to incorporate public art into developments and County facilities/infrastructure
  • Coordinate the acquisition of public art including administration of calls to artists in alignment with County procurement processes, adjudication, creating and managing contracts with artists and installers, liaison between artists, departments and project managers to coordinate installation according to project timelines
  • Collaborating on County initiatives to engage citizens and raise community awareness for public art
  • Ensure that County OHS requirements are completed for each project (sign off\'s, safe work practices, safety meetings)
  • Arrange all aspects of the unveiling/celebration of new public art pieces
  • Ensure all documentation and financial commitments are managed in a timely manner Maintain documentation and records on all pieces of art in the County\'s Art Collection through the asset management program
  • Coordinate with the Art Collection Advisory Committee and Gallery@501 regarding programs including overseeing intake and adjudication process as well as liaison with various arts groups in the county and high school art teachers
  • Ensure condition assessments are completed on the County\'s art assets including public art and artwork acquired through the Annual Art Acquisition.
  • Ensure conservation plans are developed for all public art works through the asset management program
  • Implement conservation and maintenance programs for public artwork with other RPC branches and County departments to ensure that the assets are maintained according to acceptable practices and the conservation and maintenance plans for the pieces
  • Ensure condition assessments are completed on the County\'s art assets including public art and artwork acquired through the Annual Art Acquisition.
  • Work with the Art Collection Advisory Committee on public art and annual art acquisition programs
Skills and Abilities
  • Familiarity with the regional public art context and best practices in public art procurement
  • Strong writing skills to assist in procurement documents (RFSQ\xe2\x80\x99s, RFP\xe2\x80\x99s), contracts, and celebratory communication with the public
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills speaking to Council Members, Executive, County Staff, stakeholders, the arts community, and Strathcona County residents
  • Proficiency with handheld power tools and ladders
  • Contract management experience
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Fine Art or related university degree together with a minimum of five years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in public art administration or a related field
  • Experience in placemaking, commissioning art, developing projects with planners, artists, architects and designers, contractor/artist management, or collaborating with artists from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds
  • Knowledge in collections management best practices
  • Experience in community development and acting as a liaison with various communities and community groups
Conditions of Employment
  • Submission of Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time.
