Job Summary

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA), headquartered at the University of British Columbia, is one of thirteen virtual institutes of CIHR. CIHR-IMHA s mandate is to support ethical and impactful research to enhance active living, mobility and oral health, and to address the wide range of conditions related to bones, joints, muscles, connective tissue, skin and teeth. Musculoskeletal health is critical for promoting the physical activity needed to maintain mobility, productivity and general health and well-being. Prevalent MSK disorders such as arthritis and osteoporosis can limit mobility and physical activity, creating a vicious cycle of inactivity, degeneration and loss of productivity. Similarly, poor oral health and skin conditions can affect overall health and well-being.

In cooperation with the Scientific Director (SD), Associate Scientific Director (AD) and Institute staff, the Projects and Events Officer will be responsible for supporting the respective lead for development and execution of work plans and deliverables related to IMHA projects and IMHA-led events. The Projects and Events Officer works on a day-to-day basis with IMHA team members and regularly collaborates and/or interacts with other CIHR staff, researchers, as well as Institute Advisory Board and committee members.

The Projects and Events Officer reports directly to the Associate Scientific Director (ASD) and works collaboratively as a key member of the Institute team that also includes the Scientific Director (SD), Administrator, Institute Operations, Communications and Events Strategist, and Analyst, Projects and Initiatives as well as other CIHR staff in the CIHR national office located in Ottawa.

Work Performed

Major areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Participating in weekly operational meetings and contributing to the development of key initiatives the Institute leads or partners in, including oral health, digital health, arthritis, patient engagement, and/or physical activity.
  • Attending to meetings and executing operational tasks that have been formulated by the executive team to maximize the success of and outreach for specific community events, including conferences, meetings and workshops.
  • Assisting with the planning and execution of webinars with communities that fall within IMHAs areas of focus.
  • Developing reports, briefings, and presentations to ensure effective development, planning and implementation of projects/events and appropriate representation of CIHR-IMHA.
  • Supporting the Associate Scientific Director in the implementation of strategic research priorities and the coordination/administration of funding opportunities
  • Supporting the Associate Scientific Director in conducting relevance review/project validation exercises as needed.
  • Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic initiatives by supporting the work of various project teams consisting of external and internal stakeholders, including the implementation of project plans to ensure delivery within defined timelines.
  • Assist with literature reviews or environmental scans in support of Institute initiatives.
  • Performing other related duties as required
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Inappropriate decisions could damage the reputation of the Institute, CIHR central and the University of British Columbia as host institution of IMHA, adversely affecting the ability of the Institute to fulfill its mandate.
