Job Description

The Research Office is responsible for advancing the research enterprise of the University by obtaining, allocating, and administrating research grants, negotiating research contracts, and ensuring compliance to national and international standards in human and animal ethics certification.



The

Program Officer, Natural Sciences, Security, and Infrastructure is a full-time continuing

role responsible for a diverse range of activities related to supporting faculty and student research in the natural sciences.




Responsibilities:




Manages the NSERC and natural sciences grant processes on campus. Oversees and supports the CFI research infrastructure program and committee with the application vetting processes. Supports researchers on the topic of research security, including providing regular education on the topic and specialized support to those researchers directly affected by federal and provincial research security policies. Maintains contact with other Research Office program officers to ensure that the university is aware of current funding opportunities, quota, and changes to policies, and to ensure that the University is adhering to funding agency guidelines and regulations. Supports faculty in application processes by informing them of application criteria, collecting applications, communicating granting agency guidelines and conducting initial reviews on all applications for completion and/or errors prior to review; submits final application recommendations to both internal and external agencies; and communicates all competition results. Conducts critical reviews of project descriptions, budgets and supporting documents and offers constructive, technical and substantive feedback to strengthen proposals before being submitted to the external funder. Supports committees, which includes reviewing applications for eligibility and completeness before sending to committee members for review, writing agendas and minutes, and distributing items to committee members. Creates and analyses annual natural sciences research related grant statistics, along with a five-year trend, to assist with writing various reports. Administers and maintains multiple budgets on natural sciences for research grant applications, reviews, approvals, and final reports. Develops and monitors the budget for the research grant programs and infrastructure. Writes support letters for faculty and students applying to external agencies for the VP/AVP, Research and Innovation's signature, and in some cases negotiates with the faculty and VP/AVP, Research and Innovation on institutional cash support for the research program. Writes institutional support sections for grant applications including infrastructure, cash, in-kind support and alignment with the UWinnipeg's Strategic Plan. Meets with new and existing faculty members to provide individual advice on their research program and funding opportunities available. Interprets and implements policies, procedures and regulations on day-to-day research related questions and issues from Deans, Department Chairs, faculty and students. Coordinates and delivers workshops for faculty, in conjunction with faculty/staff representatives, on research opportunities, internal policies, and grantsmanship. Maintains internal database of research opportunities and performs electronic investigations in online research databases to become familiar with funding opportunities and research programs. Communicates funding sources and opportunities to faculty via individual emails, the Research Office newsletter, and university list-servs to increase the level of research funding on campus. Maintains frequent contact with government program officers (federal, provincial), research foundation and institutes staff, and other university research officers to ensure that the university is aware of current funding opportunities and changes to policies, and to ensure that the University is adhering to funding agency guidelines and policies. Prepares and submits institutional annual reports for NSERC, CFI and award finalization documents to ensure compliance with funding agencies. Represents UW on the national research security Team Canada committee and liaises with other institutions on the topic of research security.



Qualifications:




Graduate degree preferably within the natural science field. Minimum 4 years of directly related experience. Experience working in post-secondary environment an asset. Experience in research grant writing. Experience in large-scale research project and infrastructure management. Experience in organizing and managing academic workshops and events. Experience in drafting and maintaining multiple budgets accurately. Experience with accounts payable. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to plan, prioritize competing demands, and work independently with a high degree of accuracy and attention to details. Ability to work productively under minimum supervision. Ability to make independent judgements within area and University policies, procedures and guidelines. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of internal and external contacts as they relate to the program/function. Demonstrated computer and website maintenance skills (Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Cascade or other content management systems). Experience with the Canadian Convergence portal would be an asset. Knowledge of the principals of research design and grant application procedures, as well as knowledge or mobilization processes. Ability to collect and synthesize relevant resources. Ability to work as part of a team and within the University overall. Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

Condition(s) of Employment:




Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The salary range for this position will be from $58,513.00 - $81,117.40 annually.

The work described in this posting will be conducted in-person, with an opportunity to apply for Remote Work for up to two (2) days per week.
