Position Title: Professor, Indigenous Integration

Status: Full-Time

Faculty/Department: Faculty of Social & Community Services

Campus/Location: North Campus; but currently performing in a hybrid arrangement

Salary: Academic starting salaries are determined based on qualifications and years of related experience as detailed in the collective agreement for academic employees.

What you will do:

As part of our commitment to Indigenous awareness and integration, and in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's (TRC) Calls to Action # 4, 5, 7, 11, 30-31, 40, 43, 57, 62-63 Humber has created an Indigenous Scholar, Social and Community Services to support the growth and development of culturally safe education and professional practice in social and community service programming.

As indicated in the TRC Calls to Action, at a baseline level, it is essential that students develop an understanding of determinants that support Indigenous peoples' health and wellness including culturally responsive strengths-based interventions and culturally safe care. This requires students to move beyond baseline awareness of historical/ contemporary impacts of colonialism to a recognition of systems-based strengths and inadequacies and interventions that address inequities experienced by Indigenous peoples.

While focusing predominantly on Social and Community services programming, the successful candidate may develop curriculum and teach courses within a variety of diploma and/or degree and/or certificate programs within the Faculty of Social and Community Services. The position will add breadth to the Faculty's current course offerings focusing broadly on Indigenous Studies, Histories, and Contemporary Experiences, while also supporting the development of aligned curricula. The successful candidate will have experience effectively weaving Indigenous ways of being, knowing and doing in the classroom, as well as demonstrated capacity to build and/or support Indigenous research, scholarly or artistic work, broad curriculum development, land-and-culture based pedagogic practice.

As well, this position will further develop community partnerships, including relationships with regional Indigenous communities and organizations, participate on a variety of committees, and advance college initiatives. This individual will also contribute to the overall direction of the Faculty, supporting promotion and marketing, and developing/maintaining strong industry ties.

The successful candidate will work as a collaborative team member and be expected to play an active role in strategic planning, faculty development, student advising in field practicum courses and student recruitment, Teaching will be assigned in the virtual environment (asynchronous & synchronous) as well as at Humber Lakeshore campus.

Applying knowledge of, and experience with, Indigenous pedagogies and decolonizing methodologies, the successful candidate will also:

  • Provide consultation and support services that empower faculty to effectively weave Indigenous curriculum and pedagogies into their instructional design, strategies, assessment, technology, and learning outcomes.
  • Research, design, and deliver a range of relevant workshops, training, and instructional supports to enhance faculty engagement with Indigenous histories, perspectives, knowledge, contemporary resistances, and resurgences in collaboration with the Indigenous Education and Engagement Centre.
  • Provide quality assurance support and guidance with regard to the integration and alignment of Indigenous content and courses within program curricula.
  • Gather feedback from faculty and students to assess effectiveness of institutional strategies and curricula.
  • Work closely with colleagues across the Faculty to build capacity and supports for Indigenous students.
  • Work with Indigenous communities to build mutual understanding and the development of meaningful conversations to strengthen Humber's relationship with, and relevance in, Indigenous communities.
  • Track innovative knowledge and practices in Indigenous teaching and learning nationally and internationally.
Qualifications

What you bring to the role:
  • Minimum of graduate credentials, (PhD preferred) or equivalent combination of relevant work experience and education
  • will be considered.
  • Five years of experience in the postsecondary education sector, including a minimum of three years' recent experience teaching, along with a demonstrated record of teaching excellence and classroom innovation.
  • An educational background the aligns with the Faculty of Social and Community Services programming.
  • Significant experience living and/or working with Indigenous communities and be well-versed in protocols necessary for relationship-building with Indigenous peoples.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and support students using culturally responsive pedagogies, knowledge, and resources for instructional and educational development supporting both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners.
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experiences applying decolonizing/anti-racism pedagogical principles, and a commitment to and knowledge of the principles of equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the highly political nature of Indigenous Education and experience in navigating difficult conversations towards positive outcomes
  • Well-developed interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills and have demonstrated ability to contribute positively to curriculum development and delivery.
  • Humber prides itself on educating students in the values of global citizenship; therefore, research and/or teaching (or related experience) for a minimum of three years in the areas of social justice, anti-bias, and Indigenous knowledge systems is required.
  • Applicants whose work privileges Indigenous perspectives, epistemologies, and pedagogies are preferred.
