In this role inside Torstar\'s product team, reporting to the Newsletters Director, you\'ll help manage a growing portfolio of email, on-site and in-app products, with an initial focus on identifying, prioritizing and addressing technical issues that will improve deliverability, advertising, and engagement metrics. You\'d also help scale and supervise some of the products that help us get our emails to a wider audience and generate more paying subscribers, traffic and revenue, like on-site overlays, in-newsletter banners, and promotional emails.The ideal candidate is relentless, selfless and creative. You\'d need to work quickly, thoughtfully and collaboratively, and to get to the bottom of a tricky problem, you\'d have to be as comfortable wading into Google Postmaster Tools or ad code as you are your colleagues\' meeting calendars.

  • Improving our email reliability on both the deployment and delivery sides, ensuring our newsletters and email alerts are deploying on schedule as intended and landing in inboxes quickly and reliably
  • Helping execute our newsletter strategy by managing some of the email products we have now, as well as those outside of email that grow our email base
  • Gathering and incorporating feedback to continuously refine products and ensure they meet user needs and business objectives, especially subscription and commercial revenue
  • Staying informed about industry trends and best practices, and leveraging that knowledge to keep our newsletter program competitive and effective
  • Writing user stories and epics and delivering high-quality work inside our sprint cycle
  • Collaborating with other teams - especially our marketing, newsroom, design, development, delivery and QA teams, along with our email vendor WhatCounts - to ensure our products work on launch and keep working thereafter
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Several years of relevant experience on or alongside a product or email marketing team
  • Familiarity with deliverability metrics and trends, list hygiene and segmentation, as well as email service providers (ESPs)
  • Experience working for news organizations or on newsletters is a plus
  • Awareness of Torstar and the Star\'s coverage areas, especially local, regional and national news
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a history of successful cross-functional teamwork
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and glean actionable insights
