Apply chemical knowledge and the scientific method to achieve the best desired project outcomes through a systematic and knowledge-based approach
Analyze and evaluate all available raw material options and perform research as required to find new options
Evaluate interactions between formulation components that may impact functionality, safety, product stability, shelf life, processing and capital investment requirements
Participate in scale up activities to ensure new formulations can be processed efficiently from a cost perspective and also a safety, health and environmental perspective
Conduct literature searches and patent reviews as required to support the above
Develop new analytical capability for the laboratory to better assess compositions and also aid in competitive analysis
Develop new product appraisal methods to assess component functionality, provide faster screen techniques and faster and more reliable product performance metrics
Maintain highly organized records of all batches, inventories of chemical and product samples, technical and safety data sheets, and appraisal and analytical methods; laboratory notebooks must be legible, signed and well documented so as to protect and ensure confidentiality and protect company intellectual property
Participate in the plant's Continuous Improvement Program
Work safely and abide by the company's safety rules and regulations
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor or Masters Degree in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry or Biochemistry
5-10 years of relevant R&D
Creative thinker with strong analytical approach
Excellent computer skills - proficient learning technical databases and performing detailed research
Strong interest to continually advance knowledge
Proven ability to combine knowledge of chemistry and application of the scientific method to create new formulations
Excellent organizational skills
Proficient in good lab and manufacturing practices (GLP/GMP) relevant to household, Industrial and Institutional products, and cosmetic products ; preparing samples, conducting analyses, operating lab equipment, technical data review, and evaluation; equipment calibration and maintenance; method validation
Ability to perform a variety of analytical chemistry including HPLC, UV spectroscopy; ability to critique current methods/limitations and develop new analytical capabilities
Ability to define quality specifications for new products, using statistical approaches
Ability to work unsupervised, be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to adapt to rapidly changing priorities
Knowledge of GMP (household products is required
Work Environment: Laboratory, some plant exposure
Physical Demands: Standing for long periods regularly. Occasionally required to sit, balance, lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
Hours of Work: Normally 8 hour shifts. Day and afternoon shifts and Overtime as required.
Knowledge of FDA requirements (21 CFR 210 211) for OTC products, and EPA product registration requirements is an asset
