Job Description

Ballard's MEA Manufacturing Engineering team has an opening for a Process Engineer. This full-time (on-site) position will be located at our Burnaby facility, as part of the Advanced Manufacturing Group.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting catalyst coated membrane (CCM) production and process development, as part of Ballard's Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) manufacturing processes.

Job responsibilities:

  • Process development, scale-up, documentation and control and of catalyst slurry mixing process
  • Support evaluation of new catalyst material & formulation using lab scale equipment. Maintain record of composition, work procedures and deviation, observation, and results
  • Work with production coating team to optimize mixing process for quality, yield, process capability, and safety
  • Work with production planner and operational team to make sure daily catalyst ink demands are followed and fulfilled
  • Support production for any troubleshooting and changes that may occur during ink manufacturing
  • Perform in-depth, statistic-based analysis, utilizing six sigma tools, to optimize process, identify vital vs. noise factors, establish meaningful specification etc.
Qualifications:
  • Engineers/scientists (P. Eng eligible or EIT) with 3+ years' experience in mechanical/chemical engineering
  • Experience in designing, optimizing, monitoring, and scaling chemical processes in a production/product development environment
  • Experience with hazardous materials handling, including powder and slurry processing and characterization, chemical waste handling etc.
  • Proven track record with designing processes including process control, modeling, scale up and optimization, equipment sourcing and qualification
  • Proven track record in quality engineering, development of FMEA and control plan; experiences with MSA/GR&R and Design of Experiment. Lean Six Sigma certification is an asset
  • Supplier development experience is an asset - manage and qualify changes, develop and manage specification
  • Attention to details and strong troubleshooting skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of fuel cell operation, catalyst layer design, material and process selection is an asset
  • Strong office skills including MS Excel, MiniTab, PowerPoint, Agile CM software, project management tools
  • Strong communication and team-working skills
