Reporting to the Manager of Operational Excellence, the Process Automation Specialist is responsible for designing, testing, troubleshooting, and overseeing the implementation of new and modified process control and automation strategies and for troubleshooting hardware, software, and electrical & instrumentation problems in support of the mill\xe2\x80\x99s various safety, environmental, cost, quality, and reliability performance objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Work with stakeholders to develop process control and automation strategies to improve operational outcomes
Plan and implement new and modified process control and automation strategies
Monitor process control and automation strategies for utilization and efficacy
Develop and maintain process control standards and documentation
Lifecycle management of all automation systems including all related software and hardware
Design, program, test and build automation solutions and collaborate with E/I trades to implement
Diagnose and troubleshoot process control and automation strategies, hardware, software, and control elements
Identify, train, and collaborate with E/I trade and plant personnel on process control and automation strategies, concepts, and tools
Provide technical expertise in support of capital improvement projects, process evaluations, and project modifications.
Develop and establish best practices to improve KPI conformance to targets
Provide routine reporting on specific process control activities and outcomes
Lead Process Hazard Analysis to mitigate risks when process control changes are planned
Lead continuous improvement projects following a structured methodology
May require occasional supervision of unionized tradespersons

Education and Experience

Hold a process control degree or related technical diploma with a minimum 5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Proficiency in instrumentation documentation / systems including data sheets, loop drawings, logic diagrams, P&IDs, and control narratives.
Specific knowledge and experience with hardware, HMIs, and engineering tools for GE Fanuc PLCs, including Rx3i, 90-70, 90-30 and Rockwell Allen-Bradley PLCs, including ControlLogix and MicroLogix.

Experience in the following is essential to the role:
Experience in ladder logic and function block programming.
Knowledge of structured text and sequential function charts.
Experience working with Industrial serial and ethernet communications protocols, both modern and legacy, including Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, Profinet, DeviceNet, Ethernet IP.
Knowledge and experience working with variable frequency drives.
Knowledge and understanding of industrial networking and network topologies.
A very good understanding of instrumentation, electronics, industrial electrical systems.
Experience in the Pulp and Paper industry will be considered an asset.
Experience in Lean Six Sigma will be considered an asset.
