The West End Community Centre Association (WECCA) provides recreational, educational, and social activities and services including group fitness classes, community events, room rentals, pottery classes, language classes at Coal Harbour and West End areas of Vancouver. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life of the West End and Coal Harbour communities by providing recreational, educational, and social activities and services, which are accessible and responsive to the changing needs of the communities.

The WECCA Pottery Studio Technician will work under the direction of the studio manager, and is responsible for managing and maintaining all supplies in the pottery studio, including glazes, underglazes, slips and stains.
The studio technician will provide support by tidying and organizing the studio space, monitoring glaze supply inventory and recycling clay using the pugmill. The manager may also require occasional assistance firing and unloading kilns.
The technician will carry out their duties during open studio sessions, and will be responsible for delivering the studio orientation, policies and safety guidelines to the patrons. They will also be responsible for monitoring registered participants and providing support when needed.
Responsibilities:
1. HEALTH & SAFETY
A. Maintain health and safety concerning equipment use and pottery practices.
B. Ensuring that all WHMIS safety standards are maintained.
C. Enforce all West End Pottery Studio Practices and Procedures.
D. Offer information and demonstrations concerning all pottery studio equipment.
2. RELATING TO POTTERY STUDIO USERS
A. Monitor open studio session users and ensure studio policies and guidelines are followed.
B. Be available for any artistic and technical advice and guidance concerning pottery practices.
C. Provide welcoming environment for studio users
3. POTTERY STUDIO MAINTENANCE
A. Ensure all glazes, slips, and stains are maintained.
B. Recycle clay as needed using the pug mill.
C. Unload and fire kilns when requested by studio manager.
D. Clean the studio and equipment regularly.
4. COMMUNICATION
A. Complete studio tasks under the direction of the Pottery Studio Manager by weekly communication, and report tasks completed.
B. Communicate all building maintenance issues to appropriate WECCA/ Park Board employees.
C. Reports directly to Pottery Studio Manager.
Experience & Qualifications:
Ceramics and pottery experience
2+ years of glaze mixing
Understanding of glaze ingredients and chemistry to adjust recipes as
necessary
A personal ceramics practice is a plus
Diploma or Degree from a Ceramics focused Visual Arts education preferred

Applicant Requirements:
Schedule: Mondays 2.30 - 5.30 pm, Tuesdays 5.45 - 8.45 pm or Wednesdays 11 - 5.30 pm approximately 6.5 hours per week with opportunity for more hours occasionally
Flexible schedule - the studio schedule may change seasonally, and/or the
technician may be asked on occasion to cover shifts for other staff
Must be punctual and reliable
Must be able to lift and carry clay bags up to 50 lbs
Remuneration:
$24.72 plus 8% in lieu of benefits.
